Time Crisis is an arcade shooter developed by Namco released in 1995 in arcades and got a home port to the PS1 2 years later in 1997. Unlike other arcade shooters at the time, this game allowed the player to take cover from enemy fire with a unique pedal system dubbed the "Action Pedal." Stepping on the pedal brings the player out of cover and lets them attack, letting go of the pedal puts them behind cover and also reloads their gun. While hiding makes the player invincible to enemies, they must also be mindful of the constant ticking clock. If the timer reaches 0, it's game over, regardless of how much health they have, so it's important to duck behind cover in moderation and not play overly safe.
Enemies are also color coded to help let the player know when to duck behind cover. Blue and brown enemies rarely hit you unless left alive for too long, red enemies are guaranteed to hit you on their first bullet fired, yellow enemies throw bombs that will always hit the player but are much more reactable than bullets, etc. In future games in the series, enemies who were about to damage the player briefly flash red to let the player know to quickly hide for a moment.
I decided to run the PS1 version of this game specifically because the arcade version has some emulation issues with my computer every time I try to play and record it. Unfortunately this version of the game suffers from a reduced frame rate and poor hit detection unlike the arcade version, but back in 1997, for a lot of people it was either this version or nothing at all. Hope you enjoy, as this took me way more attempts than I'd like to admit.
