Honestly it takes a lot more than this to get Medieval 3 Total War fun and replayable, but I think it's a good start. A new engine is an absolute must, a setting in Eurasia something like the Mongol Invasions would be pretty ideal and having some more in depth faction management would go along way to make things immersive and historical. Let's just hope if CA ever makes it, they listen to what the fans really want.

I think CA could take inspiration from how Paradox does families/leaders, having a leader is important, yes, but your leader does not shape how you play the game. Your leader doesn’t have a set path, or traits, but instead can be used as a general, or just produces points for all sorts of improvements. They can die at any moment, just like how it should be in total war.

They really need to loose the max 20 units limit and limit the number of units you can field through actual mechanics like supply, population etc. I would also really like to see a smaller focus on graphics in favor of gameplay and scope. Also they really need to make a better cavalry system, it's so under-powered in all the games, and also do something about the relationship between the battle and champagne maps, why can't my horse archer army just ride away?

I feel that a Mongol Invasions Med 3 could be a really interesting idea, the Mongols could start out as faction that its entire identity is based around Genghis Khan but once he dies the player has to keep the empire from collapsing. This would allow the player to form the empire to be what they want and actually feel like they are the creators of an empire and its culture. CA could throw in a completely custom nation that the player gets to decide everything from the government type to what types of units they want to focus on. Obviously it would need much much more ideas and effort but I feel it has potential.

I remember you and I talking about this. And about my idea for Medieval 3, in 3 parts. Part 1, Mongol. Starts in like 1180's or something, focuses on Genghis, Ogedei and Mongke, with a map that goes from China and Mongolia over to Novgorod, from Gedrosia and the Iranian Plateau, over to the Levant. Focused more on Central Asia and the Caliphates, the Liao and Jin. Save Song for later. Part 2, the Mongol invasions of Korea and Japan, India, and the Crusades, 3-9 (increasing the map to include all of Japan, Korea, India, Poland, Hungary, the Baltic States, Anatolia, Egypt). Also a focus on the Zengids, Seljuk/Rum, and Byzantine fight for supremacy not only of Anatolia and to retake the Levant, but for religious and cultural supremacy over the Bulgarians, Rus, Kingdom of Serbia, and Novgorod. All areas that have never really received the kind of focus they deserve. Part 3, finished Medieval 3, including all of North Africa, all of Europe, start dates of like 1080, ~1330, and ~1440. You could do best of both worlds this way, too. Play as Genghis, it is obviously about setting up an Empire, and a dynasty that won't fracture (hint: it does). But given the historical characters of the periods, it would be easy to make some factions more "follow the character's history" and other factions (like playing as Subutai instead of Genghis) more "any history you want to make".

Mongol: Total War would be amazing. A TW game centered on the Mongol expansion across Eurasia would be a very fresh and different experience compared to say Medieval 2 where they were invaders from the edge of the map. I'd still want a separate Medieval 3 centered on Europe, North Africa, and West Asia, but a Mongol-focused game that would put Mongolian, Persian, Indian, and Chinese factions at the center and all in one game would be fantastic if they can pull it off. On the character-focused factions thing, I think it should still be there in a way. It's important to have historical characters that feel real. What CA could do is balance it out by having smaller factions be character-focused but open up the player's control over culture/society the larger and more powerful they become, e.g. if you start ruling only a duchy or other smaller feudal state you are a bit limited but when you become a king after taking control of the other subfactions in your culture you gain more complete control over the faction. But if the player chooses to start a campaign with a larger faction/ruler they will have that full level of control of from the get-go.

I agree with everything you said!! Total war definitely needs to change if the franchise wants to be what it once was. I would personally like to see a feudal system of sorts being added. Like in your kingdom the different regions are a fief of a lord and you can raise an army from the feudal lord. However to make it balanced the amount of troops would depend on how developed the region is and if you raise a regional army that region will no longer have a garrison (as the available forces have been used for a mobile army). I think that would add an extra level of difficulty and challenges for a interactive and massive campaign. Just my thoughts.

I am eager to see what they have planned for the next big historical title. I am not one who was very tied to medieval 2 or empire like many other fans were. One thing worth considering is that even if the next mainline historical game releases next year, there will have been 5 years since the launch of Three Kingdoms. It will have been two years since Warhammer 3 released. I know Pharaoh is being marketed as a full game but let's be real, it's a Saga, made by an entirely different team in a different country. There was only four years between Attila and 3K, and in that time they put out two Warhammer games. I think it isn't unreasonable to suspect CA might be doing something big for their next historical game, like a new engine or change of direction, especially since there are a lot of resources going SOMEWHERE at CA and despite community sentiment it probably isn't Hyenas. After all, there is something in the pipeline that makes Rob Bartholomew confident enough to threaten cancelling their most successful franchise ever, and I really doubt that thing is Total War Pharaoh...

CA would have to build a new engine based off of the engine used for Rome and Medieval 2 Total War for a Medieval 3 to work. The current engine they're stuck on (because they're cheap, lazy and have become creatively bankrupt) would only work for an Empire 2 Total War at best. What CA could do is give us a Medieval 2 remastered but something tells me they don't want to because people will stop purchasing newer Total War titles unless it's set in the 18th century and/or later. If Medieval 2 is remastered, with all the mod support and limitations removed, CA would effectively bankrupt their business because the possibilities would thus be endless for the modding community that there would be no reason to buy a newer total war game until they rebuild a new more modern engine, with all the features, mechanics and more based on Medieval 2.

OR a massive game that expands to a scale even further than Empire that goes from Iceland to Japan on one map. Edit: There could also be a kind of rebirth of the Medieval 2 DLC’s from the Spanish colonizing the Americas (which is my favorite) or Britain or one of the others. Maybe even more like an HRE DLC which is possible because of how many smaller kingdoms and duchies and other owned lands.

I think a Mongol Total War would need to be a massive, MASSIVE endeavor. I'm talking something that could never be achieved in a single game. To this end, I think that in order to do the game justice, CA would have to do a similar kind of style to the Warhammer trilogy, splitting it into 2 or 3 games. Have one of them focus on Europe, the Crusades and the Mongol invasion of Europe. Another set in the Middle East and India, and one in the Far East with China, Japan and Southeast Asia. Then, finally, give us an all-put sandbox that combines all three, Immortal Empire style. As much as I dislike some of Warhammer 3's aspects, credit needs to be given to how they handled the sheer size of a global-scale Total War, and that needs to be emulated in order for a Mongol Total War to succeed.

Honestly, I don't care about a politics system or a research system at all. Medieval 2 had none of these and they haven't made a better game yet. Rather, they should focus their efforts on: A: Reinstating the population system, and tying the recruitment system to it. B: Re-introducing character traits and character development that is primarily influenced by player actions, not all this railroaded make-believe. C: Allowing troops to move around without a general again. D: Scrapping the limited build slot system in favour of the RTW/M2TW method of free construction. E: Improving the AI, for example by removing unnecessary features like a research tree and a politics system, which apart from providing tedium for the player to lose all his enjoyment of the game in, only serves to distract the AI from it's true purpose: being a challenge for the player to defeat in the field of battle. F: Calming down a bit with the AI cheats, unless there truly is no other way of providing a challenge, or in other words, unless the developers freely admit that they are too incompetent to achieve point E in any other way. G: Bringing back naval battles. H: Bringing back proper generals speeches that are influenced by the circumstances of the battle at hand. I: Make the game less arcady in general. J: Absolutely no "legendary" characters. They make sense in Warhammer, they DO NOT make ANY sense in ANY historical title. K: If you absolutely must have a politics system, make it trait based like in stainless steel and similar mods. that way it won't distract the AI, it will be less annoying to deal with for the player. Do all of this and I might consider buying a total war title again. Until then, outside of the fantastic modding community, total war will remain dead to me.

what i found after replaying Medieval 2 last couple of weeks is that newer Total War has successfully made every battle to be as low stake as possible. U dont worry about losing massive amounts of casualties anymore because they will be replenished magically by recruiting prisoners and magic replenishment in foreign territory. meanwhile in old TW u need to invest in a building and population first to be able to replenish, this makes planning campaign and battles more crucial, because even if you win a siege but if your army get slogged and murdered in the street then the next enemy stack will wipe you out

I agree with you, I would really like a Medieval III or an Age of Discovery title. And, of course, a new engine would be crucial for its success. I hope someone hears us :)

I think it would be really cool to have complicated politics about uniting the mongol tribes because you would have prove your faction has power but is not so threatening that the other tribes try and destroy you

I’m an EU4 guy, and no Casus bellis in TW games always irks me. Especially in Troy where factions across the map will DOW and b line to your territory with endless waves that never give you a chance to breath and strategize

I agree. I haven't enjoyed the latest game styles for "historical" titles. The way Warhammer total war played worked for the world it was meant for, but that type of game play didn't fit me for Troy or Three Kingdoms, and seeing the gameplay for Pharoh Total War does not pull me back in.

I total agree with you, they cant call a historical game without a family tree. If they put all them ideas what you said into 1, it really could be the best total war game, but will they, tho NO. I honestly give up with CA they just focusing making their new games feel and play like warhammer. It's very lucky we got modders for the old titles like med 2, rome 2, and my favourite atillia to play different eras of history. Pharaoh will be a disaster when launch i dont understand they put the same people in charge of the game who made thrones and troy as them games done really well. The sofia team needs to get sacked 😆

Yes...Medieval Total War III that returns to the darker traits of the Original Medieval Total War. I think that Mongol Total War would be awesome! With a map that has all of Europe and Asia it would be epic! 😎

I want to see Family tree I want to see some type of dueling before armies collide would be awesome to watch before your armies rush each other I want to see a real use or need for formation such when Vikings use there shield wall they get massive buffs to attack and almost can’t lose any units to archers unless there longbows or crossbow units I want to see massive amounts of settlements to capture because the three settlements in a province is just silly I want all the settlements of the time period to be available to fight and take New rebellion mechanics and when you crush a rebellion you should have the options to have a purge of anyone who were supporters of the rebellion allowing you to dismantle traitors families and governors

Bought a cheap steam key for Attila, just so I could play the 1212 AD mod. Also because it's the only TW campaign that has my home country of Serbia haha! Been having tons of fun, can't stop playing it... I really crave a Medieval 3 game!

The Fans knows exactly what they want and CA knows it too: Medieval 3: 1300-1450 Pike and Shot: 1500s-1600s Victoria: 1840-1901 Empire 2 Shogun 3

If we get a Victoria total war I think we need it to start around 1820 and go all the way to 1920. From the opium wars to the ‘great European war’ of 1914 - 1918 including regimental colours and the evolution of firearms and artillery and the need for players to adapt to an ever changing world would be for me a great total war game.

I think the perfect total war game has already been made. The only problem is that it doesn’t exist as one game, all the features are spread over various games and mods.

I agree with everything you say. But removing the characters would be a huge mistake. While yes character in some of the franchise are to much in medival two they just add flavor to the world and they should expand that flavour in the next game to make sure every game is diffrent and unique just like the character the players designs. Total war needs more political war fare in it to, both demographically with shifting population(refugees, immigration) that will add to rebellions, the economy, religion, and even available buildings as well as units in combat as well as the politics for taking over other factions. Characters are important for many reasons; Revolts, civilar wars, intrigue, are all things in that medieval total war 3 should include, these things would a lot more sense if there where characters and agents that are used to not just add flavour like in medival 2 but to bring unique experiences designed by chance and the player actions. We all know it that somtimes after the first 75 to 200 turns the game becomes a grind, it loses a lot of it challege or entertainment value, that where chacter would come in and keep things intresting with having them impact the faction in signifigant ways as chacters in meidval tend to grow up and die new character means the factiosn shifts a certain way, mabye for the better mabye for the worst. The game cant be faction focused or character focused. It has to be player focused, it should be multidimesinal to flesh out the world, war happens in tandem with politics, politics involes people and people are shaped by there culture and society. the characters need to embody the society because they are a creation of it, a reflection, when one character dies we should be able to see how the culture and society has changed with the rise of that characters children or successor. This would help total war with an especial problem that they forget about war. is that war doesnt change (qoute from fallout, lol)but the people it touches changes a great deal.If we only see units and building and a map with color on it and don't see characters with there unique designs and unique traits embody this then it would be less immersive and not add much to the game. Total war has not done this in there games but if they did you would see why they should revamp how they view characters, because while you guys might think a game revolves around the character the medival two i know and most other total war games treated them like accessories and that why they are so disposable, character represent people, you should feel attachment to people, that attachment leads to immersion. Anyway i think they need to evolve the characters a little, like some should be used as generals but other in the tree should be administrator and others should be more charming and be used in intrigue and diplomacy, and if they remaster medieval, consorts (queens) need to be thing, and lady's and princesses/women need to be altered, for Europe they should add without a claim pope gets mad if you attacke someone without them being excommunicated or somthing to add some realism in high middle ages at least.

*looks at the map* I'm gonna be real with you chief, on CA's current trajectory, thats not Medieval 3 but Medieval 3-7 with a DLC each game for adding in the maps and factions of the previous games.
