I love this video. It's seriously more than what 80% of guys do. It really shows the ability of modern awd systems like honda or subarus. Honestly as a daily driver, tacomas are horrible and I can't stand them. As time goes on, awd is becoming more and more capable of doing what we call adventuring.

You’ll need to see the upcoming videos of this series. Terrain is going to get a bit rougher, and what you said will be on full display. We warned a guy with a much more capable vehicle than mine (built Ford Ranger FX4), but it seemed that he might not have been as comfortable navigating through a rock garden. I’m sure his skills and comfort level were leveled up that day!
@jg8263

I always tell people, a modern awd is as good if not slightly more capable than an open diff "4x4". The limitations are typically in the suspension travel limits of independent suspension vs the solid axles. Something Jon does a good job of addressing in videos. Obviously tire choice and lifts are also important, but if you have an awd and open diff 4x4 with the same clearance and tires on both, they would be pretty evenly matched. Edit, forgot to mention gears, I am comparing awd to 4hi, 4lo is something else entirely, although if diffs are open it is of limited utility.

Jon, do you think about buying a 2023? What do you think about going to a 10-speed, non-ZF? Do you have any insight on why a new V6?
@JonDZ_Adventuring
Жыл бұрын
My current rig has been working for me well. The 2023 Pilot TrailSport is quite the upgrade in terms of AWD capability. I’d say the Bronco Sport badlands took the crown away from Honda for most capable AWD system, but iVTM4 version 2 seems to match the capability and the Honda 10 speed (which seems to be customized per application) should put Honda back in the lead. The new engine loses Vtec but goes from single cam to twin cam. Not sure what that will mean though. While the new trailsport seems to be a better platform to build upon, I’ve spent so much time and money on my current build that I just want to sit back and enjoy it for Atleast another 3 to 6 more years. By that time, an all new midsized Honda might be available. Who knows, maybe they’ll have a true Low gear transfer case at that point. Perhaps, they’ll have a quad electric motor AWD system. If Honda makes me an offer I can’t refuse, I’d rock a new TrailSport. I traded in my Subie for $15K and bought my Passport for $38K pre-Covid supply chain issues. It’s a tough sell for me to pay $45 - $52K for a brand new vehicle. I’d love to build a dedicated full size overland truck, but not going to ever buy another turbo. The car industry seems to be obsessed with turbo charging as of late.
