All good stuff. I use safflower oil on brushes to store them overnight without cleaning. Also, the digital path is even better if there is a projector in the mix - work on sketches, for colour, composition, ratio etc., then project that image onto the canvas and trace it like that.

Having a spreadsheet with all your equipment and where it is can save a lot of time. I haven't redone mine since I moved into my new one, and it's frustrating forgetting where you put that one thing you don't use often. I had a spreadsheet for my old studio and it worked well.

I use a table pallet also but I mainly use quality wax paper plates as pallets, its a good way to keep track of colors being mixed and keep colors clean. They are also light weight and I can move them to wherever I need them for quick access while I'm painting. I don't throw any of them out till I'm done with that particular painting in case I need to reference the colors I mixed.

For those working with water-based media like watercolor or gouache, you're probably going to want to frame the piece anyway. If you're okay with using pre-made frames, but the frame or matte before you start and trace the inside border on your paper. It can be very annoying to have a great piece that you have to pay the extra money to have a custom frame made because it won't fit a standard frame/matte. Also, the color choice of Florent's shirt with the background color of the video makes it look like he's in one of his own paintings.

Florent... After preparing the canvas with gesso... what about also painting a coat of varnish onto the canvas... as well as giving it a shine, couldn't it also give a sealant of smoothness? Thank you Florent. 😊

I also paint with a candle burning and indeed, what could possibly go wrong...; I don’t believe there is any record of the Old Masters systematically burning their studios to the ground.

One idea on top of composition: how to paint non-boring/engaging paintings AND! telling a story. Imo story telling in paintings is somewhat neglected nowadays

Do you wipe it off when you go and use the brushes?
@michaelwoehl8822
Жыл бұрын
@@nikolapenava29 Yes, the safflower oil goes very well with the linseed oil in the paint, there is no trouble, just wipe the brush lightly with a towel and it's ready to go. the brushes last 10 times longer and are perfect to use every time.

@@EllenR654 Kitchen oils tend to be processed (apart from cold-pressed oils like olive, avocado etc.) Artist's safflower would be a safer bet.

You can save time by working on 2-3 paintings at the same time. Whilst waiting for the first painting to dry etc. etc. you can start on the next. Any paint left on the palette from the first may be utilised in the second painting, thus avoiding scrapping off and wasting expensive paint. Start on a third painting if needs be before returning to the first painting. Brushes may not need cleaning thoroughly because they're in constant use and you'll spend more hours actually working instead of twiddling your thumbs.

@@FlorentFargesarts Do you think that I can use kitchen safflower oil purely to keep the brushes in it? According to my research kitchen safflower oil is a non-drying oil high in oleic acid, can this cause my painting not drying? Or I just should stick to artist grade oils?

Do you think that keeping the brushes in an oil bath for several days (in case there is a longer break in painting) could affect the shape of the bristles or deform them?

Thank you Florent! Useful even just to think about streamlining one’s space and practice, makes painting feel more possible for those of us struggling to even get to it.
