Hi Everyone, Don’t forget about cleaning those smart slates, sync boxes, iPads, and surfaces around your cart. Stay away from pouches, etc that can trap viruses and bacteria. Be safe, practical and give yourself extra prep time for the safety of you, your fellow workers and families! Please share and let’s do our small part to make a difference!

Michael Wynne I was using pouches for my transmitters since I got them. I recently sold my 688 and got an 833, so I thought, since the pouches were falling apart, to use instead the clips that came with them. Then I see this video. Didn’t even think of that problem, ironic that I switched already lol. Also I feel your pain about the cancellations.

Be your enjoying that 833 Adam!. I've had the same experience with some of my pouches as far as the clips on them breaking. I don't think I have enough clips to cover all my Comteks so I'm going to need to order some more.

Kudos to you for making this video. I have not seen anybody else do a similar one to date. A minor point, you are not sterilizing, that is a much more rigorous process involving an autoclave or caustic solutions, rather you are cleaning with focus on killing and removing a lot of germs (germs being bacteria and to a degree viral particles). Also please tell us more about the Hamilton-Buhl headphone and model. How does it sound?

Thank you RallenMan! Great point on the technicalities on proper sterilization techniques. What's important is that bacteria and viruses are killed from the surface before putting on talent or personally handling. As far as headphones are concerned the Hamilton-Buhl's sound excellent, they are really robust and the packaging is designed to be designated per user. I purchased 3 packs of ten before I released this video, as I'm having the feeling it will be a hot ticket item moving forward.

Hey Michael, normally your lav-cables get stiff after using alcohol on them (alc dries out the softener within the rubber?!). Mine wasn‘t usable anymore after 4 monthes of cleaning them this way. Do you feel any difference by now? And how often do you clean them with alcohol?
@MichaelWynneCAS
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, In the past I only typically cleaned periodically during a full time show. But considering what's going on right now I'd to it more regular/daily. I've never heard of lav's being destroyed in this way, but that's not to say it couldn't happen. But at the end of the day, safety would come first and production could simply eat the cost.

Question: Is there a potential problem with using alcohol on cables and drying out them out or making cables brittle?
@MichaelWynneCAS
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, great question. I can only answer from my personal experience on this one and say I've cleaned my lav mics this way for years and haven't noticed any deterioration of the cables. However one would need to use their own discretion on frequency of cleaning.

Definitely a smart idea with the Comteks and headphone, gotta remember that when I’m working as a utility. Keep up the great work Michael! And stay safe and healthy out there!

Thanks Alejandro, one thing I didn't mention in this video is that these prep pads can be used on the skin as well. So if someone is wearing lotion, etc and tapes are struggling. It will solve that issue as well. Cheers!

I use the same wipes for all the wireless gear, also I clean the cable for the boom after each day (sometimes just a regular wipe will do) and for my harness (VersaFlex) I use Lysol. I used to wipe down my phone once a week (I don't like germs and I live in the Caribbean, so humidity is a problem) now I wipe it with alcohol every 2-3 days just in case, since it goes to my face and my ears.

Excellent point about the boom cabling, and using Lysol for the body worn equipment Carlos. One thing I do for long cable runs in Amor All wipes. Not a disinfectant but excellent at conditioning and cleaning with a nice new finish when done!

Not my experience after years of cleaning Suso, however on the other hand I haven't cleaned them daily this way either. But it's highly likely this will be a requirement moving forward coming back working in TV and film on high profile union shows. If they need to be replaced so be it. It's just the cost of doing business and production will foot the bill to keep everyone safe.

@@MichaelWynneCAS From DPA page "Unfortunately, cables cannot be disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or other harsh chemicals, as this will make the cable jacket brittle over time" www.dpamicrophones.com/mic-university/proper-mic-hygiene probably we will need to consider the microphones as consumables, and charge to the production
