Thanks so much to the brilliant jazz pianist Micah Thomas. Growing up in Columbus, Ohio, Micah started playing piano at the tender age of 2 (the word prodigy comes to mind). In 2015, he received the Jerome L. Greene Fellowship from the Juilliard School and received his Master of Music (M.M.) degree in 2020. He is now touring and recording, both as a leader of his own trio, a steady member of the Immanuel Wilkins Quartet, and as a sideman for Ambrose Akinmusire, Lage Lund, Billy Drummond, Zoh Amba, Giveton Gelin, Stacy Dillard, Joel Ross, Nicole Glover, Melissa Aldana, Etienne Charles, Harish Raghavan and others.
In this conversation, we talk about Micah’s beautiful new Piano Solo record, his terrific live trio record Tide, playing in the amazing Immanuel Wilkins quartet, his childhood, music his parents were listening to when he was a kid, life in New York City, the genius of Thelonious Monk, the current wave of young 20-something jazz artists, Gerald Clayton, Brian Blade, what pisses Micah off, and much more. Thanks again to Micah Thomas, one of my favorite young jazz artists working today, and a great guy.
