I was 10 years old when Time Tunnel premiered in 1966, the same year Star Trek premiered. I loved the series and was upset when Time Tunnel was cancelled after only one year. When James Darren became part of the last two seasons of Star Trek: DS9 as Vic Fontaine I was overjoyed.

The Time Tunnel theme is nothing less than gripping and powerful! Some pretty good historical episodes, and a hokey one set in 2 million A.D., with silver-skinned & suited humanoids. You never knew where the two scientists would end up; every week was a different past era.(Or future, for that matter.) What a shame it lasted only one season. (Sept. 1966--May 1967.) 😁⌛⌛⌛⏰⌚

There is a theory, which I think they mentioned somewhere early in the series, that great events themselves distort the time-stream and, like gravity wells do to spaceships, attract time travelers. Thus, Grandma going for milk and the Battle of Agincourt are NOT equally probable places to land. Doug and Tony's bounce around the time stream is thus only partially random.

I remember the episode about the French Revolution, when one of the leads, Mr. Darren maybe, meets a French corporal just before the end of the show, and it turns out to be Napoleon, long before he rises up to lead France. I wanted to see that story, but no....

James D. Parriott’s Voyagers! (1 season, 20 episodes 1982/1983) was probably best series to follow Time Tunnel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voyagers! NBC thought they could directly challenge CBS’ 60 Minutes, in the time slot, so cancelled the show. Efforts to re-new the show in 1984/85 ended, when Jon-Erik Hexum accidentally shot himself.

To clarify (?): "Great events" are those which have proven to have a lot of tendrils in the time-stream -- that is, to influence something which influences something else which decisively shapes history. Doug and Tony's path is more likely to be influenced by (attracted to) such events, both for (fantasy-)physics reasons AND because the Time Tunnel computer (which is tracking and in part controlling their bounce) knows more about great events and is presumably able to track them better.

I can vaguely remember this being repeated in England in the seventies, it was a bit like Doctor Who with its time travelling stories. Maybe even though Doctor Who was almost unknown in America in the sixties, I wonder if the producer had been to England at the time and was inspired by our top sci fi series.
@davidallbaugh6858

It could be. Always interesting in the differences between American and British sci-fi series. In the US, the leading figures are part of a large organization like Star Fleet or the US Govt. usually the military like in Time Tunnel or Stargate, SG-1: While in Britain, it is usually just a somewhat eccentric gentleman with a couple of young companions cruising through space and/or time on their own machine like in H.G. Wells' The Time Machine or Dr. Who.
@luisreyes1963

Huge difference between The Time Tunnel & Doctor Who is that Doctor Who can traverse entire universes, whereas The Time Tunnel is limited to our own existence in time.

Although not as big as the city complex featured in The Time Tunnel, the other underground facility I can think of is Stargate Command as scripted to operate under Cheyenne Mountain, but instead of using a portal to travel through time, they use an ancient artifact to cross distant galaxies, I wonder if the writers for Stargate drew on the idea from Irwin Allen's The Time Tunnel
