Thanks for all your kind comments, always appreciated! Arnold is right that painting is a slow process and timelapse tends to make it all look so easy and planned. In reality, there is at least double the amount of footage, even in timelapse speed, that is chopped to make it bearable to watch. If you watch it again, look how much the background changes, especially in the bottom 2/3rds of the canvas. When I start the canvas I have a general idea of the composition and position of the light source, but apart from that I just throw paint on and let it guide me in creating the atmosphere. Sometimes it works quickly, sometimes it doesn't but the important thing is to keep going, it should work in the end!

Great painting - I have such great difficulty in my paintings with in-perspective letters, roundels and swastikas etc. Mark makes it all look so easy. To missquote - to those that do not know how to paint,it looks easy. Those that do know, know how hard it is.

AS A BOY I MADE THE AIRFIX DEFIANT, I LIKED THE GUN TURRET ,THAT MADE IT THREE SHILLINGS THOUGH IT WAS SERIES 2. WHEREAS THE SPITFIRE WAS ONLY TWO BOB, SERIES 1.

wow love it , and great subject matter , the bombers mistook the Defients for out of ammo hurricanes heading home so paid them no mind as they pulled along side them over Dunkirk , only it be recieved be a hail of .303 ammunition from almost point blank range and a beam !!!! But , by the time the Battle of Britain started the Jig was up , and the Luftwaffe pilots had the mesure of the Defiants . Headon attacks were the order of the day , and the Defiants were cut to ribbons ! lovely work

how do you know when the bottom layer is dry enough? iv had some landscapes following bob ross method take a week or more to dry.

I think these are done with acrylic paint, hence they dry very fast
Great artwork , but i somehow am skeptical that simultaneously not one but two Defiant with a top speed of 470 km/h can catch up so easily with a Heinkel P with a top speed of 500 KM/h. Mr Postlethwaite Should have kept it authentic and reduced it to one Bolton having a lucky shot !

You do know that real air combat is nothing like computer games...? Aircraft don't just fly around at max speed all the time, the Heinkels were manoeurving with bombs aboard at 6000ft when the Defiants spotted them from 17,000ft. In a gentle dive the Defiant would be at least 50-100mph faster than the Heinkels at this point so picking out the targets as pairs, (their planned and briefed tactic), would have been reasonably easy. Oh and the combat report, written by the pilots at the time, describes it exactly like this, you can read the pilot Philip Hunter's combat report in our book Dunkirk Combat Archive, Page 103. The other pilot was P/O Young.
