Tinman, you saying you haven't given anything away is false! You have gave us (especially me) more knowledge than you know man, I now have confidence to port my own saws and do full rebuilds on blown up ones with zero hesitation. The shared knowledge is greatly appreciated big dog! It's always a great day when I get that new Tinman video notification :)

Add a little zip, but make it reliable. Piston work, tickle the timing a bit, basic stuff to make it run better and cooler. No need for orangutan mode. You can do that to the 261.... Great video sir! Y'all have a great day!

Tin, as far as I’m concerned, I don’t know $hit from a shoeshine when it comes to the inner workings of a saw, and my mom used to tell me to go with your gut. So do what you feel is right for you. When I was teaching guys to weld, I used to tell them “ you ask 10 different welders the same question and get 10 different answers with the same end result”. Thanks you for giving us the information and knowledge that have probably come with many trials and tribulations. Much love to you brother. And it’s been in the high 90’s here in NC for the last couple of weeks. I’ll trade you some of that Canadian “heat” for some of our North Carolina Sweltering heat and humidity. We finally got some rain today for the first time in a few weeks. Normally I cut my yard weekly, now it’s been almost 4 weeks. Have a great weekend man. Much love 🤙🤙

Really enjoying this series. I like the way you think and this is gonna help me when I bring my 026 back to its former glory. I don't think some realize that when you have a bearing with a plastic cage, you can't freeze it without risking damage to the cage during install. Plastic gets brittle and fragile at low temps and one good jar can cause that plastic cage to break or crack (maybe in a place you can't see you broke it). Best install would be no heat on the bearing and no freezing either. Heating the case (like you did) is the safest choice IMO and that's exactly how I'm going to do my 026. It'd be interesting to see the difference between the 2 ring and single ring piston weights. That piston you showed looks like it has a nice domed top already though. I think a good cleanup on the transfers maybe go a tad wider in places would be more than enough to make this one a runner. Good stuff!

Hey Tinman, the 026 is even stock an awesome little powerhouse. Recently ran mine head to head with a 261. what I would love to have is the snappiness of the 261 in a 026… maybe with a little timing advance by a modified key?? Single ring but with a second 024 ring just filling up the ring groove (you remember our leakage debate?) And of course all the little moves that are often overlooked: piston work… some carb tweaks. And for sure a rad looking pipe 😍

Great channel! What about just working the piston without touching the barrel. Putting gullies in the piston top for transfers or exhaust and doing the intake timing on the intake skirt. Thinking that you can get more focused or directional flow plus pistons are much cheaper than barrels wen things go south. Widening ports is more risky for catching rings on a work saw to me. Reliability, good flow and a sharp chain won't cause pain. South African opinion :)

My vote is for single ring, do some work to lower transfers, leave top transfers alone, leave piston alone, pipe it, and give it a little more intake

Hey Tinman , thats the first 026 ive seen with more than 98 on the Exaust. Maybe caused by a to narrow squishband. Well see. I also wondered about the Intake duration on these 026ses. Its a high revinn Prosaw and that with 134 deg. Its always a magic how saws act with total different Numbers. So Numbers are just Numbers of a System.

Two rings, like Stihl designed it, like the combustion chamber and piston. Smooth the piston and windows. I understand your premis, it would be interesting to know the squish and the thickness of that base gasket, a thinner gasket is an option and an easy alternative for most folks. Different thickness of gaskets were offered by Stihl for some of the older saws as well as custom aftermarket options. I have not had an issue with any of my builds using only gasket sealer. Make sure the mating surfaces are clean and give the gasket maker proper time to cure and you won't have an issue doing a base gasket delete were squish permits.

I'm only pushing 40 and tool/boot weight, and lifting heavy things is something that I think about often. That way hopefully I will be able to run saws as a senior. That is going to be an awesome saw. I was wondering about decompression on these smaller saws, Is it for the benefit of the user or the saw? The reason I ask is 1980 Honda xr200 bikes had one. A lot of people laughed at the thought and would disregard it. the teeth on the kickstarter would round off and the bike engine would need to be split to fix it. I obviously didn't learn this the hard way. haha. I think the trick with firewood saws is to build it so it resists heat, will start easily and doesn't need constant tuning.

I say 140 intake duration, 101 exhaust roof definitely widen too, just blend in the entrance to the transfers and leave them mostly stock, heavily flow the piston really taper down the end of the wrist pin bosses, try to keep crankcase volume minimal, gut the muffler run a piece of 1 inch emt for an outlet, I am of the opinion that larger crankcase volumes mostly help the top end with an expansion chamber exhaust. In those engines the pipe pulls the charge in were on non expansion chamber engines are reliant on crankcase pressure to push in the charge. Try a low crank case volume build see how it goes.

Iffn it ain’t broke, don’t fix it? 😂😊😂😊😂Tinman- at 72 I run saws myself more than at any time in my life. Lighter saws for branches are a must! Why would you punish yourself with a lond bar heavy saw ( I have spent days recovering from this) when a small responsive saw will cut down on the effort and possibly pain, to prove that you still have it? Great project!😊

Don't go gangbusters. The anti vibe in those earlier Stihl's is not exactly great. And remember, those saws really wake up with mods, but hold yourself back a little, the carb size limitations are very easy to outpace. Great saws though!! Incredibly lightweight and reliable. I still have two with hundreds of hours.

The numbers I have on a 026 44.7mm Hyway cyl I have are Ex opens @104 atdc Ex closes @87 Transfers open @134 atdc Transfers closed @59 Intake open @75 Intake closed @78 atdc Squish was at .17 I am still trying to get my head around port numbers, I feel like I screwed up somewhere... Depending on the piston size, I have read of people using a 028 (I think it was) piston in an 026, it has a wider skirt and a flat top so you could widen the ports and get the squish more accurate.

Measure port timing in duration from port opening to port closing, its much easier to understand and no need to find TDC. Looking those numbers what you have i think the transfers would need to be raised some to shorten the blowdown timing and to give it more transfer time/area.

I have a mini fridge in my shop that has a shoebox size freezer section. Never knew how handy it would be lol If building a high rpm screamer, my vote is single ring. Otherwise, I like both rings. For teaching the average beginner porters, I'd say leave the upper transfers stock, not always necessary to make decent power and not everyone has a right angle head.
