He might just have a more director reliant acting style. There are actors who can seemingly follow instructions to the individual fibers of their facial muscles, they are brilliant. But they need a director who is motivated and skilled enough or they'll be the ones mocked. Johnny's style of inventing his characters on his own is extremely stable and especially stands out in a cookie cutter director film like the POTC. But his weakness is that he needs to be motivated enough or the characters start becoming too similar. The most robust performer has a balance of both qualities, but it's extremely rare for it to be balanced the right way for actual success, navigating through the maze of when to follow the director and where to stand your ground is such a fine art.

I'm kind of rooting for Timothee here. He's not gonna be Wilder Wonka, but that's okay. Wilder's was a veteran already, wise, cunning and knowledgeable gentleman. Timothee's seems like what he's supposed to be at that time: full of wonder, a dreamer, trustful of others, yet hardworking and excited to share his little magic. If I have any problem with this future project, it would be the painfully obvious crushing and cruel society (I'm too tired of those enviroments in movies).

Sure but that character is an adult that has been extremely successful and in some ways is jaded. Chalamet’s voice to me seems like a first grade teacher reading a story to their students which is totally wrong imo. Gene’s Wonka would say some of the silliest and most outlandish things but he said them with absolute sincerity. To him creating a “world of pure imagination” wasn’t simply a game to entertain children, it was his life’s work and he took it absolutely seriously. In other words Chalamet seems like an adult talking down to children but Gene was truly one of them at heart.
