The pure sound of steam without diesel. Nothing like it! And the whistle entering the tunnel is absolutely pro! It’s a must on the railroad.

Possibly the coolest train video in the history of train video’s. Can’t tell me that she wasn’t physically capable. Hard working, completely involved and cheerful to boot. I know that steam is less efficient than other methods of locomotion but damn, it’s still attractive and gives me chills to watch and listen.

The Great Northern Railway also drove on the right, the Flying Scotsman was built that way, & later converted to LHD. Whether a loco is LHD or RHD matters a great deal when positioning signals. HS 125's are centre drive!

Interesting to see her using the on / off method of control for pulling away, I saw a driver on the Watercress Line doing similarly only more exaggerated (full open / full closed) 2:17 I was wondering is there a pressure gauge downstream of the regulator? Could be useful but I guess it would displaying a very erratic reading.
@erisdiscordia1649
4 жыл бұрын
On most steam locomotives, there is such a thing that you're talking about. What it is is the steam chest gauge or the back pressure gauge. A lot of engines would have these gauges to ensure a quick and efficient start without slipping the wheels. And it would definitely look a bit erratic when pulling away, but it would get progressively steadier as the steam chest is filled.
@stephensmith799
4 жыл бұрын
@@erisdiscordia1649 on the handful of times I have driven a steam loco I have found it impossible to sense how much steam is getting to the front end as it is infinitely 'springy'... so your steam chest pressure gauges are VERY useful!

it’s crazy how UK and US steam locomotives controls look and are operated differently. very interesting
@Living_Life_RN

Not only are the controls of Great Western locos like that different to those used in the US, they’re also very different to those used on locos throughout the rest of Britain. The GWR is well known for doing things their own way, which is why GWR fans love them and everyone else hates them.

Pardon my ignorance but it was my impression that British locomotives had the driver on the left side of the cab whereas here in America, they sit on the right. But here, in the UK, the driver is on the right. Was this unique to the Great Western Railway?

The fireman made one serious error. He didn't even look at the single line token he had picked up and he never repeated it to the driver! It could have been the WRONG token!

What about the giant jump cut whilst loading passengers at the platform? How do you know he didn't tell Tina then or if she looked herself?
@CGT867
6 жыл бұрын
Maybe he did - but it's usually something you do immediately on receiving it and when they stopped he didn't go back to it - he went on with his firing duties. He should have held onto it till they stopped instead of just hanging it up.

Ah, armchair comments, love 'em. At Winchcombe the responsibility is to keep a look out and make sure that nobody is about to wander off the edge of the platform whilst hidden behind the screen of their iPad, camera and that nobody is opening doors etc. You are stopping there anyway and the token is always checked once the train has come to a stand rather than as a distraction at a safety critical time.
