I get perfectly round bokeh balls out of my GH5, I love this lens. It is my go to for portraits and B Roll. It just depends on your work flow. The Pani 42.5 doesn't even compare to the sigma. It really just amounts to taking a few steps back if you can, if you like the 85mm. It just takes an adjustment. I never use in the studio for vlogging. It is totally a niche lens. If you are a portrait photographer or do head shots then this is for you.

Omg!!! The blades on that lens look like a weapon in Mad Max! I’m assuming you used all of the Harry Potter features of the lumix to pull off the badass focus and self timer shots? What impresses me most is around 4min. You pull in tight on the bokeh balls of light and the clarity of your hair strands in that image is impressive! I’m wondering how much post tweakiness was in that image?

The Olympus 75mm f/1.8 is another great lens but also often not a very practical focal length even outdoors. When you can find a use for it, it’s fun to use and makes beautiful images. Heck, even if you don’t use it much, the lens itself is so darn pretty, you can just sit and stare at that thing and smile :-)

It's funny how different people's perspectives can be - I just can't get used to work with an 85mm equivalent, it's too short. On the other hand, the Olympus 75mm f/1.8 is one of the very few lenses that I *really* regret selling. I bought mine for a ridiculous price ($200, with a battered E-P2 thrown in), and it was the most delicious portrait lens that I've ever owned. Worked really well for sports and action, too.

An immediate ‘niche’ application for this lens on m43 camera bodies is in low light grungy live music. F/2.8 just doesn’t cut at these venues especially if the performers are hyper active and the camera is m43. You need all the help you can get. So portrait, live indoor entertainment an indoor sport turns the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 into a more versatile lens than just a mere niche lens. For an old pro in his 8th decade trying to cut back on weight and size I have to admit I was surprised at its small form factor, very cute indeed.

Nice video 👍🏻. Would you do a comparison between the Leica 42.5 f1.2 and the Sigma 56 f1.4?
@keithholland4322
4 жыл бұрын
I can tell you right now that the Leica would win in terms of weather sealing if you just got them wetter and wetter until they were ruined, but that would be kind of stupid! The Sigma would win on sharpness. It is the sharpest lens for micro four thirds and it is sharp edge-to-edge wide open. The Leica is sharp in the center wide open, but the corners are soft until you stop it down a bit, which is why I don't own one. If I have to stop it down to at least f/1.7 to get sharp corners, I might as well just use the Lumix 42.5mm f/1.7 which is much smaller with an excellent close focus distance.

Wait so I watched your video on the relationships between lens focal lengths and sensors but I am a little confused. Why is a 56mm lens 112mm on full frame? Is it a crop lens? Wouldn't it be 56mm on full frame and with that micro 4/3rd's sensor on your gh5 it would become 112mm because of 2.0 crop factor? That would make it 56mm on full frame and 112mm on your crop sensor right?
@marcus3d
5 жыл бұрын
@@helpsloan Right. The 56mm on the MFT body has a field of view equivalent to a 112mm on a FF body. So on MFT a 56mm F1.4 is said to be a 112mm F2.8 equivalent, since that's what you'd use on FF to get the same picture. (And the last factor, besides focal length and F-number, is the ISO: A MFT sensor at ISO 200 is "equivalent" to ISO 800 on FF.)

This would be an excellent lens for equine photography and product photography as well. With some extension tubes, I expect it could do some respectable macro (or at least close-up) work as well. I used to use my Sigma 60mm f/2.8 with extension tubes for close-ups and sold it to an eBay buyer who was looking for something to get detail shots of firearms with and he really liked it. I think the close focus distance on this one is about the same on paper although I don't know how well it works with extension tubes.

I keep revisiting this lens. This time because the Sigma 85 Art with Viltrox adapter on the Pocket 4k doesn't have peaking, and it's enormous. I'm not even going to try that combo for photos on the GH5 II. Although the 35-100 is fantastic, this could do well as a lens for covering keynotes and wedding toasts, whether video or photo.

For portraits, or inside for you tube video head shots, I like the Panasonic 25mm and the 42.5mm. That's nifty 50 and 85mm equivalent. with f1.7. For those of us on a budget, the 2 lenses together were less than $500. These 2 lenses plus the kit lens (14-42mm) take care of my basic needs in my office/studio. I also have a few vintage Canon FD lenses that I use with a speed booster. They're fun to use, but let's just say they probably are not appropriate for serious photography.

On Sony, the 55mm f1.8 is even sharper, and produces images that always look very special. The Sonnar design gives something special. You see it on the Zeiss 135mm f2 APO as well, and even the Canon 135 f2 which is based on the Zeiss with a little Canon twist is also very special. Against that 55, this Sigma just doesn’t quite do it for me. And on MFT it has to compete with the sheer brilliance of the 42.5 Nocticron or the 54 Olympus feathered bokeh, however, going to that 110mm range gives a little more compression that I like, so I think MFT is actually a better niche for it than the Sony.

Hey Gerald, nice review, looks like a really great lens. After watching an earlier review, I have the 16mm f1.4(mft) and am amazed by how sharp and versatile it is. Wondering why sigma bring out unusual focal lengths such as 30mm f1.4 and now 56mm f1.4? Why not have direct competition, 25mm and say a more practical 45mm instead of 56mm? It would seem that these 2 lenses are right up there with the best from Pana and Olympus, and at around half the price of the nocticron and pro range. Why 56mm? Just a marketing ploy? or some secret backdoor agreement not to undercut the others?

It was so disappointing coming from FF and hoping that this very large aperture lens would be comparable, it wasn't even close. It was almost laughable and caused me to go back to FF and get a Sigma 85 1.4, which actually gives great bokeh, even while doing full length portraits. Maybe this would be good for video, but absolutely not for stills. If you are trying to take full lengths and want decent bokeh, simply put, go full frame.

For someone like me who has the Viltrox EF-M2 and the Sigma 18-35 with my G85, which ends up being around 26-50mm (FF equivalent), getting a 42.5mm isn't enough of a difference in focal length to be worth it personally. Yes, 112mm is a bit odd compared to the standard 85mm for portrait work, but I still think it's a compelling lens considering the sharpness, f/1.4, and even the price.

The lens attachment sequence was awesome dude! Also I agree. My pores need their own vlogging lens. They've got a lot to say!

Great review/demonstration. But like you, I like the 42.5mm range for the tight shots, or the 35-100 Power OIS II for the flexability.

well done Gerald. This is the kind of clean and simple review I prefer. Thanks for doing this.

I'm anxiously waiting for my pre-order to ship from Henry's. For myself, I think it'll make an absolutely fantastic indoor sports lens. The problem on m43 is getting that shutter speed down in low light situations. I have the 35-100mm f/2.8, which is beautifully sharp, but still too damned slow! I've taken it out to the climbing gym to get some nice action shots, and ended up at ISO3200, which is pretty lousy on the g85. I'm also looking at the Samyang 135mm f/2.0 for the same reason; the 100-300mm f/4-5.6 is wonderful outdoors, but pretty much useless indoors. Anyway, great vid as always!

Have you been using this lens for indoor sports? If so, how do you like it? It's what I have been hoping to use as well.

@@Wristworm Sorry, didn't see this reply! I've used it a ton both indoors and out, and it's epic. In fact I just finished shooting a couple music videos which used it heavily. Its autofocus on the G9 was decent enough (no follow focus on my gimbal, sadly). Here's an unedited photo from my last indoor shoot (56/1.4, ISO800, 1/60): photos.app.goo.gl/6uVRc4GccHnjG51d7

No problem. I ended up getting one. Love it. Happy with the results I got with a basketball game.

I have this for my Sony a6500 great little lens so far and ohhhh that bokeh! It completes my Sigma Trinity if you will. The 16, 30, and 56mm are great if not a bit noisy (AF) lenses.

For portraits I really like the lack of distortion, requiring longer focal lengths. 85mm FF equivalent is my minimum, and I'd prefer even longer, like 120-200mm FF equivalent.

Love that you are recording how you take the picture at 3:00. I have a GH5 and I'm surprised to see your exposure fluctuating. Mine doesn't do that. Am I missing a trick? I think if you did a series of videos showing how to operate the camera for video and stills using that POV, it would be awesome for newbs like myself.

Thanks, Kai! Some cameras will momentarily change the exposure, often by changing the aperture, just to acquire focus. In that sample, on the G9, when you switch between the zoomed-in focus checker and then focus with pinpoint it flashes a brighter exposure to make sure everything is sharp, then it switches back to the exposure you dialed in for taking the picture.

The niche for this lens I see is indoor sports. Basketball and volleyball with their notoriously crapping lighting would benefit from the large aperture and focal length.

Sports (indoor of otherwise) really demands focal lengths 200mm and beyond, unless you plan on sticking yourself where you shouldn't be. It's of course super expensive to get something like that in a large aperture.

FINALLY! A review for the MFT version. Leave it to you! Yep, I've one of those niche users that was waiting on this. I prefer right around the 60mm range on MFT (I know that's a personal taste thing). Thanks for the detailed review and that awesome docking intro.

Same here. Some of my best, most interesting shots were on the Oly 60mm f/2.8 macro used as a short telephoto lens. It's a great focal length! Waiting on my own Sigma 56/1.4 from Henry's. :)

The content of today's video was not really for me, since I don't use MFT. But man, your music was great!! Therefore I liked the video. :-) Did you do the music by yourself?

Thanks a lot! I did not make the music, merely remixed it. I sourced the original tracks from Soundstripe. I'm glad you liked it though. Thanks for saying so! 👍😃🙏

Gerald Undone how long do you think you’ll be sticking with m43 with these new cameras coming out mostly going towards ff. Do you think it’s still smart to keep investing in m43 lenses right now? I have a gh5 myself and was considering this and 12mm

Gerardo Arreola I think its a bit premature to count M43 out just yet. People will think I’m crazy but I returned my A7iii and bought a GH5S because I’m an all video guy and the ergo and feature set on the GH5S aligned with my needs more. Not to mention I can pack in my hiking bag a camera body, 12-35 f2.8, that 42.5 f1.2 Nocticron Gerald mentioned, and a 50-200 f2.8-4. And will have room for lunch and a gimbal. That’s 24mm-400mm (full frame equivalent) range-all with 10 bit 4K 60p.

I tend not to think of it that way, Gerardo. I know what you mean, but if you think of them like tools the question is more about getting the job done as efficiently as possible. Do I still think M43 can do that? Absolutely. If full frame cameras become cheaper and cheaper with more and more features, there will come a day where the efficiency of M43 is no longer as big of a gap, but it won't lower the usefulness of the gear you already have.

I use this with the 30mm 1.4 when doing street walks. I'm an introvert, I enjoy talking to people, but in person doing something like raising a camera at someone within a wide-angle range isn't very comfortable. It may help that I'm used to the Pentax 40mm and 70mm on an APS-C crop body which comes out to 60mm and 105mm equivalent on something like the Pentax KP. Going over to an equivalent of 60mm and 112mm wasn't much of a change for me, but if I'm being honest, I shoot a lot with a Pana Leica 12-60 2.8-4 unless I really need the faster lenses for low light or subject separation (f4 on a ~50 or 60mm focal length gives fairly good separation, but it's obviously not going to beat f1.4).

Do you use your G9 for photography, or just video? When do you use M43 and when do you use Sony?

That's the problem with m43 third party cheap lenses. Most of them are designed for aps-c.
