Yeah, I've read that. To summarise for everyone else: "It's impossible to reproduce their natural environment so we're not even going to try." "Pet shops sell tiny cages too so why can't we?" "We think height is comparable to floor space." "We don't understand ventilation or ventilation in comparison to cage size." "Saving money on substrate is more important that giving your animal a good home." "We think cage cleaning as frequently as possible is a good thing, despite the fact it is known to cause stress." "We think that rust is a good, safe thing and quote [Our only regret is that we are unable to supply the runways pre-rusted.]. We didn't pay attention in health and science classes." "We don't actually understand the legitimate needs of these animals."

Honestly that cage is nothing more than a less colourful crittertrail with staircases added. It's so ridiculous how wrong this cage is for many reasons. On that site they include rust as a feature. Ok like that's just disgusting. Rust can cause tetanus and rust smells bad. Honestly this cage is plain cruelty, it's the same idea of building a home for humans but the whole house is just staircases with a treadmill at the top and at the very bottom is a small closet where you can walk nothing more than 6 steps. What kind of life is that? Climbing staircases is not equal to floor space. There's no enrichment at all in that cage. Climbing staircases all day won't keep any animal entertained. Whoever seriously thought selling that cage is so smart, well they should try living on a staircase for the rest of their life.

That cage looks sooooooo boring! There is literally nothing to do in it except run on a wheel, and where is the space to put wood, paper, and carboard toys for chewing? Where's the space for beds and food hoards? What about tunnels? And multiple wheels for when multiple animals are sharing the space? Also, I'm making a homemade cage with with 2 levels (will add a third later), each level being 432 square inches. It would easily fit in the same space as their cage did, would work great for small apartments, and provides more than enough floor space. And it's probably cheaper than theirs.

The tubes and add-ons are great if you incorporate them into a bigger cage (I use habittrail tubes to connect levels of my cages and have used the add-ons before), but the main cages they supply are just too small. That cage is horrendous, I commented on their facebook - it's absolutely ridiculous apparently they've deleted almost half the comments of people telling them they're wrong. I am using a detolf right now - it's a perfect cage for under 65$ the lid costs maybe 10 dollars to make then you're done... like honestly you can get a nice trendy looking cage from ikea or even a fish tank is better than this - find a 300 gallon on sale on craigslist for super cheap and your hamster or mice would be THRILLED to live in it. It makes no sense to shove an animal in the smallest cage possible for no other reason than 'it looks nice'. If you're worried about it looking nice - I get it cause... bin cages aren't very pretty and when i had my guinea pigs in the midwest cage i HATED IT they're so ugly - but not i have them on a rack system for a garage and its... so so so so perfect. I only paid 110 for the rack system. I wish people would stop shoving animals in small places like this....

What I don't understand is why cages like that are even manufacturered to begin with. If companies made big spacious cages obviously people would buy them and pay more than they would for a small cage. I feel like hamsters are still being marketed as mostly just a starter pet for children, so maybe that's why? Since they aren't considered to be a serious pet just something for kids to play with then why would people invest into a quality cage that provides an enriching environment. I wish this would change.

Reading the inventor page on the website - it says the inventors son was found in his workshop attempting to build his gerbils a bigger cage, and thats how this cage was born. What on earth where the gerbils in before this if this is the upgrade? It also states that the creator has a civil engineering background so sadly probably has little insight into the appropriate sizes for small animals and does just see it from a design perspective. Reading more about him it also says he's retired, so I think he's probably from a time and age where there wasn't as much information on the appropriate care required for hamster etc :( but times have changed and a lot more people (but sadly not everyone) are educated on welfare standards for small animals (especially thanks to people like you Erin!)
@Emiology

Looking further into the website hes stating this cage is appropriate for two to THREE dwarf hamsters and three to FOUR mice (it also irritates me that one of the photos isn't even a domesticated mouse which just hints to me that they're not 100% educated in small animals) despite the fact it's not even suitable for even one dwarf hamster or mouse... if the creator hadn't just plucked these numbers from the air and had actually researched how many would be suitable for his cage he would've come across the fact that these numbers are far from correct...disappointing

I went to a pet shop to buy my hamster some chew toys and I saw a dad and his daughter buying a hamster in the SMALLEST CAGE I'VE EVER SEEN. It was smaller than the WALLROVA cage. I told the dad that he needed to buy a bigger cage and you know what he said? "My daughter wants this cage, so we're getting this cage". Like seriously?

When I was younger I wanted a guinea pig more than anything! But then I realized I really didn't have enough room for a guinea pig... so I didn't get one. I got a hamster when I had the room and money (and time!).

SERIOUSLY? That is the worst cage ever. MY hamster also has a small cage (don't worry, I've bought him a bin cage and will be transitioning soon) but it is not that horrible. Augh! Leveled cages are terrible and there is not enough burrowing space. Also no toy space. Anyway, if you are looking for a new cage for a hamster, (sry, I don't know too much about other small pets) try www.petsathome.com/shop/en/pet I think this will link the page but if not got to peachy pet paradise's new mice cage video and there will be a link in the description box. Or, make a diy cage, there are plenty on Erin's channel, such as the test tube, detolf, and billy XL. Or maybe a bin cage, the minimum is 105 quarts (365 square in.) but I recommend a 120 quart or bigger, this would be at least $12 or less in the U.S.A. PLEAse don't buy this cage, as there are so many bigger, better, options and more cheap at that.

OMG My DIY cage was focused more on the hamster that the looks and it still looks nice in the living room! HOW CAN PEOPLE DO THIS AND THINK IT'S OK????? EDIT: And it cost about 80€ to make while the cages in the petshops were half the size and cost more!?!?!?!? What has the world come to?

That tiny cage looks more like something that would be in one of those horrendous vivasection labs... Mice, hamsters, rats, ect, are treated so terribly by those who make and market these death trap cages, as well as the thoughtless people who buy them and throw them into a "trendy/cute" cage for the rest of their short lives... it's absolute torment... Thanks so much for making this video, oh and your train turned out amazing!!👏👌🐁🐀🐭

That cage is absolutely crazy. I am pulling my hair out from how incredibly twisted their ethics are, and how they try to sound as genuine as possible to get into people's brains. The part about wanting their steel to rust is absolute arrrrrgghh - I don't know how to describe it! They seem to know as well that small cages are bad, but they try to get around that and make it seem okay by adding HEIGHT! Also, the fact that they need to include the runways to make the floorspace seem bigger really shows how terrible that cage is. I am in complete disbelief right now. It really breaks my heart to see those poor animals in those conditions. I really hope that someday people will realise the importance of space for small pets, despite them being very little, and that they will move on from the outdated information. Thank you for speaking up about this topic and helping spread relevant information to new, and even experienced, pet owners! Also, that DIY train is so cute! Osmium really seems to be enjoying it. Great job!

They should really watch your videos and learn something before the decide to make "trendy" cages I mean your cages are trendy and spacious and the amount of money for a tiny thing because that is not a cage😠😠😠😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😢😢😢😢😢😢😤😾I live in the UK so maybe I will make lots of complaints.Erin you are a hamster saver thank you😇 great diy by the way!

UGH I've seen that cage just recently as well. It's terrible! The hamster facebook group I'm in has been trying to comment and email the company about it, but they just keep not responding and deleting all the comments. Not only is that size terribly small, but imagine when the poor ham falls out of that wheel at the top and takes a tumble down all those bridges!! And elderly hamsters wouldn't be able to make it up there to get to the water bottle. UGH I really hope most people have enough common sense not to buy that.

That tiny cage was absolutely not suitable for our hamster. I hope people never buy this kind of tiny cages as it would stress out our furbaby and giving very bad living conditions. Thank you for the video and I like that tiny toys you made for your hamster 👍🏻👍🏻 I made mine too using cardboard boxes 💙💙

Dear lord, I knew this was bad, but didn't realize how TINY it was! Kaytee's Add-on, the one even they know is too small for a full-time cage, is 96 sq in! When your cage is smaller than the smallest crittertrail, you're doing it wrong.

So I don't know if this was law or just the policy of the only petshop in town, but when I lived in Finland you couldn't buy a hamster without proof of a cage that met some size requirement. I remember the minimum size was still probably on the small size, but would at least have excluded atrocities like this cage! They even had similar requirements for frogs. All animals had a minimum cage size and if you didn't have that, no pet for you.

I’m so sad, just looking at this. My hamster’s bin cage is 870 square inches, and has a mesh roof, and one mesh side. It doesn’t look the best, but it keeps my hamster so happy. Soon I will be building a very similar cage as Iodine’s (the one close to Erin on the right), and attaching it to my hamster’s current cage. That means he will have about 2000 square inches of floor space. I feel so bad though, as before I came to this channel Pumpkin, my Syrian ham, had a CritterTrail cage, for his first month home. He is fine now, but I regret it so much, and it caused him so much stress. Please don’t buy a “stylish” cage. I’m begging you

I have two bins for hamsters. A 200 quart bin, and a 30 quart bin I use as a temporary travel bin which is as large as the toy Tiny Tales and Crittertrails. The 200 quart bin can sit on a child's chest or desk, which is not larger than a laundry basket...

Hello Erin! I have had a few hamsters when I was younger and I was a awful owner, with small cages, not enoght bedding and so on. But thanks to you, I am gonna give my hamster (who's not born yet) the best it can have. I have bought an IKEA detolf (2hand!) and have ripped so much paper to bedding that my fingers hurts. I just wanna say thank u for learing me to be a better hamsterperson. / Love from Sweden

That cage makes me want to punch someone...obviously the someone who thought this cage was a good idea. I agree with you, if you do not have the space to give the animal their basic needs, then dont get the animal. My room is tiny, so I dont have the floor space to have a hamster or a guinea pig (animals which I would love to have). But I do have the space for a tall cage (in my case a double critter nation), so I went with rats instead since they require more height than floor space.

On amazon a hamster haven Savic is about 65 pounds In pets at home it is 75 pound 60 pounds for that is a joke! That is unacceptable I can cope with people who have the outdated info of 360 square inches but they know exactly what they are doing and promoting. Completely agree with you . These cages need to stop

"But Erin, the climbing ramps and height makes up for the small floorspace!" No, no, no. That cage is such a bad idea, and for reasons you didn't mention. Not every animal wants to climb *really* high to access things. And that cage is SUPER dangerous. Even skilled climbers like mice could fall, and, yeah, maybe they might land on another ramp, but they also might not. And with hamsters, or *any* small pet, you never, ever want to take risks. Maybe your hamster won't swallow that cotton bedding, or maybe their leg won't get stuck in that mesh wheel, but wouldn't you rather just get a solid wheel or shred tissue paper than have to potentially pay an expensive vet bill for having to amputate their leg? It's the same thing with this cage. A fall from that height could kill your pet, especially if they land on a solid toy at the bottom or one of the lower ramps. And, of course, that floorspace makes a CritterTrail look like a mansion, and it's obviously awful in that sense. But I wouldn't even use that for temporary use because it's just not safe. I couldn't sleep soundly knowing one wrong step and my mice could fall to their death.
