If I remember right too, you need the clamping force for the glue to be full strength. I've heard that gaps make it a lot weaker.

End grain glueups are never very strong. Sometimes you just need to have a longer piece of wood for something that'll never carry a load though

@@soap6381 you would be better off just using wood glue alone than what this guy did. Boards are not even flush, and what you would do would also largely depend on the application. Some situations a quick fix would not apply, and you would have to find a more permanent solution. You can also drill angled holes in both sides of one board and easily screw them together while hiding the screws

This is the solution to this problem if solved by a 5 year old brought to fruition. Many joints exist for this issue, like the scarf joint, finger joint, fastener plates used like brackets, corrugated fasteners embedded or just buy the correct length of wood for the project

It's an alternative solution for using a dowel pin to join two pieces of wood. It's not about "needing a longer piece." You could turn the top piece sideways and do the same thing.

I'd suggest adjusting the screw until you get the tightest fit you can without that having to be with it not being even. He backed it off to straighten it.

End grain can't really glue well just like that screw or not, it's just going to soak up all of the glue that won't hold anything.

This has been proven false. End grain joints are the strongest glue joints. The wood is just 10x stronger in that direction so it makes the glue look weak.

It's a solution for not having a dowel pin but, you should show the measuring to center/align the hole in the top so it comes out flush. Not so easy as it looks.

This won't last regardless of the glue... End grain to end grain is the worst assemblage you could do.. Especially if you only have 1 row of planks.. You need to overlap each row with a gap and use dowels to strengthen the assemblage.

Glue is doing nothing on endgrain. Glue needs long grain to penetrate and bond. The screw also has no tensile strength. Couldn’t be a weaker joint.

Or. Just use the correct length. That is not going to be strong enough. Use epoxy in both drilled holes in addition to the cross cut. Correct length is the best option.
