At the beginning trying to use a new foreign language takes a lot of effort and concentration. It is mentally heavy task needing firm motivation and encouragement. People who self-study can benefit trying to reach and find others in the same situation and forming small study groups or pairs. By helping each other it becomes easier, more social and rewarding experience. It also helps from slipping from the plan when you feel you are together doing the activity and you don't want to let down the other person just because you feel occasionally lazy or tired. It becomes a kind of social contact, which gives you strength to take the needed steps. Once you become more fluent, it is easier to add more interesting content and activities to the learning experience. It becomes easier and more natural, requiring less mental effort. Then it's time to try to forget translating in your mind and to start thinking using the new language. Then you don't any more think about the structures of the language, you have practiced enough to make them automatic part of using the language. Even in that situation you need even more interaction with other people using the language to become immersed enough in it to really make it effortless. So, it becomes easier to use. And since it's easier you can do it more and benefit more from using it. It becomes a positive feedback circle.

Watching this list you gave us reminds me about the challenges with other languages. For most people there aren't challenges with : tonality, no new sounds which your brain isn't used to recognizing , no major difficulties making the sounds not difficult gender rules, not much need to care about formal or informal expressions or situations. the written form of the standard language has almost 100% direct correspondence one to one with the sound of the spoken language. language can tolerate some unusual word ordering without becoming impossible to understand (some flexibility allowing some mistakes not to be so problematic or to be used for emphasis) Writing symbols are mostly very familiar No language becomes really easy before you have learned it. But some things in the language can make learning tricky. Finnish language has some complications, but as the list above reminds, in many ways it is easier than many or most other languages.

You mentioned writing down new words to save them for later use. In some situation it can be useful to use your phones software to record new words. It should be accessible very fast with minimal tapping,so that you can make these audio clips in any situation fast and later study and organize them more for later use. Especially accents and dialects are more useful to store as audio clips. We are not all so good in writing phonetically useful notes of words we haven't heard before.

@@ireneto Perhaps it should be added to this context, just to be on the safe side, that recording other people having private conversations without their knowledgeable and permissions is illegal activity. But everyone has legal right to record all conversations to where they are participating. It is considered to be part of the right to free speech. Polite manners include that you inform others of you recording, but that is not legally required. Such recordings are just for private use. Making them public would require a permit to publish and it be governed by the rules about privacy, confidentiality etc.

You mention that people have shorter attention spans. Attention is related to motivation. Games are a very successfully way to give people instant gratification type feedback and keep their attention longer. There are games, computer games, designed for teaching Finnish to people with learning difficulty like dyslexia but also to those learning Finnish as a second language. Here's an example: Jäämaa Aurinko paistaa kuumasti. Olet hiekkarannalla... Plim!
