My teacher made me practice spotting by sitting on one of these turning office chairs, just spinning around 🤣 that was quite helpful

I am a figure skater who has taken up ballet to help with my skating. I learned about spotting yesterday in ballet class. As figure skaters, we are not told about spotting on the ice when we execute jumps and spins. Today, I tried spotting when entering a simple two foot spin and the spotting actually increased my rotations and speed of rotations. Your explanation is so simple yet totally applicable for us figure skaters. Your instruction on how spotting helps with preventing dizziness was so useful! Thank you for your instructional video...I will be sharing this with my skating students and other fellow skaters!!!

Thank you! This is really helpful. I got into ballet about 5 years ago as an adult (never danced when I was younger) and I've found it difficult to get some of the basic information that I'm sure most dancers get when they are 'little ones'. The most instruction I've gotten is that my head should be the last part of the body to start the turn and the first to finish it. I have no doubt that the details and basic things to practice will be really useful!

I am a little confused about spotting. Does your head proceed your body a little, trail behind your body slightly, or does it stay stationary with your body and just your eyes move when doing pirouttes?
@SaltySugarPlum
5 жыл бұрын
a little of both! the head will both precede the body and trail behind the body for multiple turns. the head very seldom stays stationary with exceptions like an arabesque turn where you spot your hand in front of you. if you want to think of the turn as a clock, imagine you always want to spot 12oclock (and we are turning clockwise in the center of the clock) think of the head staying 'behind' for the first half of the turn, but then preceding the body for the second half of the turn. keep your head at 12 as long as possible, even as your body begins the turn. wait until your BODY reaches 3 or 4oclock before whipping your head around the full clockwise circle back to 12 again. your body and head may align for a brief moment passing 6oclock, but ideally, youd like your head to already be facing 12 again, even if your body is still behind at 8o'clock. if you are doing a single turn, then you are done. for multiple turns, you repeat the process. the head stays at 12oclock while the body passes from the previous turn, into the next turn, through 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, 3 again, until your head can no longer stay and you whip it around again.

My teachers always yell at me to spot and it’s annoying. I attempt to spot and I still suck at turning and i still get dizzy! Like idk how like my head literally can’t find anywhere to look because it’s so blurry
