If anyone watches this video, please don't listen to this guy. I know he means well but his lack of understanding of the basic coolant system is terrible. The expansion tank cap(radiator cap) should be tight!. the little coolant system vent next to the cap is the air bleed screw. This screw when opened part way and slowly will let out the air in the coolant system, If You change the thermostat, after you refill the coolant you will need toi remove air from system. Always by the right parts for your BMW. BMW advises you change the expansion tank when you change the water pump, or if you have overheated the engine. The rusty looking crud inside his expansion tank indicates a dirty coolant system. This should be flushed out. Never use just water in an engine unless it is an emergency. The cap on the expansion tank will relieve pressure in the system, when water or coolant gets hotter it expands, it has to go somewhere, the cap will let out excess pressure. The thermostat works by restricting the coolant or holding it in two distinct places. The enginge creates heat, the coolant absorbs this heat and when the coolant in the engine gets to the thermostats preset temperature the thermostat opens, the hot coolant from the engine is then trading places with the coolant in the radiator, In the radiator the heat is lost. the coolant that was in the radiator is now in the engine absorbing more heat. This cycle goes on all the time you are driving the car. When the thermostat fails (usually open) the coolant does not stay in either the radiator or the engine long enough to either absorb the engines heat or in the radiator long enough to lose the heat it has absorbed. On an aluminum engine, the engine heat is the most critical thing to manage. Buy the thermostat the factory recommends. Buy the new pressure cap, these things are very cheap, the engine is not.

+john Kemple Hey John my bmw 740il when I drive it after a while the coolant is splashed all over the engine and I can hear from inside the car that something is boiling, I cant see where is it coming from, no leaks after the night on the ground...you think its still the cap?

John... yes... Totally agree because you are RIGHT. My car overheats when I turn the AC on while sitting in the driveway after running for a few minutes. As it starts to run hot I switched to heat and it went back to the normal temperature. Would you diagnose that as a thermostat? Unfortunately, I put one in from Autozone because the dealer was out of stock

Expensive thermostat won't give you the lower temperature rating before it opens. You cn purchase a thermostat with a specific temp rating. Are you just guessing how the radiator cap works? LOL And you should remove all that "guk" around the neck of the coolant tank. That could cause your cap not to tighten properly or makes it very hard to tighten or to open. The cap clicks in place, when you tighten it. The cap release over-pressure through that little valve under the cap. The number under the cap tells you the rating. I know this video is posted in 2012, I hope you learn more about car coolant systems. :p I learned how to work on my BMW all from youtube!!

I just bought a water pump.. maybe for no reason.. I opened up the expansion tank to remove some coolant.. it was over full.. and now im over heating..

Where do you get the expansive thermostats from? I've looked everywhere and all I can find is regular thermostats. How does that work anyway? Does it really expand or is it something internally different than the regular thermostats??

P0733=Gear 3 Incorrect Ratio P0734=Gear 4 Incorrect Ratio, your transmission is in "limp" mode, Have the following sensors checked on the transmission, input sensor, output sensor, and speed sensor. The transmission is not getting a signal from one of them,So it doesn't know how fast your going so it doesn't up shift.

thumbs up ?? all i saw was waving fingers - your sign language needs some work - you don't want to run your engine cold - every car should run 210 or gauge in middle for good fuel consumption and no unused fuel getting into oil past rings ??? Most cars now turn on check engine light if coolant is below threshold .....

Thermostat opens at a certain temperature through hot coolant. The pressure and water pump pushes coolant flow through the system. Yes there is pressure in the cooling system. The radiator cap does have a breathing valve to relieve pressure.
