Very nice, simple, and useful explanation. Basically what is seems like you're doing is to closer you get to the green, the more your setup and technique begins to resemble what you would normally do in a greenside bunker (open your stance & clubface and take more sand behind the ball).

Rick, how different is you swing length compared to if you were playing off the fairway? Is the 90/70/40 yard swing from the bunker the same as you would hit for a 90/70/40 the same as from the fairway?

I like what the Un-Professional Duck has to say Rick. You and Pete do an excellent job in instructing golfers of high handicaps and I for one appreciate it very much. I like this lecture on bunker shots. Here in Las Vegas most of your fairway area is bunker. Meaning we have plenty of hard pan ( hard sand and rock with tall bushes and mounds through out ) and only a few yards of fairway and then a postage stamp size green with a concrete finish. I am just kidding here gang. We do have some lovely courses but all too often the hard pan is much more a part of my play than the fairway or rough. Anyway, I enjoyed this lecture and will attempt to put it into play. Las Vegas Joel

The key is to strike the ball first then the sand AFTER the ball.. this is counter-intuitive to do, golfers are conditioned to hit the sand before the ball, keep our body behind it and open our stance when we are in any bunker! 🙈 what is the distance formula for club selection? One extra club?

ripply kibbles same idea as the 90 yarder really. depending on your distance. Grab the club that will get you there. If the face of the bunker is too high to get there club down until you are able to put yourself at your most comfortable yardage in.

You should apply these shots on your own rounds. It feels like when you are calm and comfortable, you play much better. And as your tip to focus on hitting the ball clean and good, should be applied to every shot. Too many focus on their swing on the course, don't change your swing on the course, just hit the ball good!

Rick, I can't think of any reason you wouldn't play the 70-yarder exactly like the 90-yarder, except with less swing. Why even talk about possibly hitting behind the ball or changing to an open stance? Shouldn't you just hone one quality ball striking swing and stick with it?
