Our little workshop has used multiple patterns and variations for making masks in quantity (we've been giving them away to hard hit and less fortunate groups like our local homeless shelter, etc), BUT Gina's pattern and technique is by far the best! We tested multiple designs and what we found with Gina's design is that it has a really nice "air space" at the front - it all has to do with the specific curve Gina calculated for the front of the mask. We also LOVE watching Gina's videos, she is a wonderful teacher - the pacing emanates patience and understanding all the way through. Thank you Gina! you are the best!

Thank you so much, Gina, for the added sizes and tip for elastic. That's SEW much easier! I've made masks for my coworkers in healthcare and making more for my family, with and without the nosepiece and/or pocket, depending on individual requests. I enjoy making these masks as gifts from the heart in these uncertain times. I can't thank you enough for making the easy, instructional videos and appreciate your sharing your talents with us. God Bless.

Wonderful update, thank you! I'm up to 150+ masks now, all with pockets, & a few with smile windows. I use less pricey muslin fabric for pocket liners. Re the use of interfacing - interfacing is non-woven & makes a good barrier to germs getting through woven cotton. I cut my interfacing 1/4" smaller to avoid interfacing my ironing board when applying. Love the new way to encase elastic here - saves much time! I always finish with top stitching. Masks will hold up better after washing. Hand wash is best, to protect elastic. A quick press & mask looks new again. I also cut 3M air filters for pocket inserts. For those who can't stand elastic at their ears, I cut a 3" long piece of 3/4" elastic & sew 2, 1" buttons on each end. Now your ears are free as this elastic is worn at the back of your head, & the ear straps are now pulled over the buttons, instead of ears. 🤗

You put 2 1" buttons on each end. I get that but at the same time am a little confused. So there is one elastic going around the lower part of the head? And each of the 2 buttons will go into a hole where? Do you make two button holes on the elastic besides each button? Thank you for your help.
@heatherconte5445
4 жыл бұрын
You put the buttons on each end of the elastic or piece of fabric, whichever you choose to use, then when you put the mask on instead of having the elastic behind your ears you would put the elastic from the mask around each button. They call these things ear sabers because the extended time people were wearing masks made their ears sore. So the buttons are used instead of your ears. Hopefully that makes sense

Thank you Gina! I have made and donated over 200 of your masks. People love them because they fit so well. I tried several other patterns before I found yours and now these are the only ones I make. I too figured out how to chain stitch to save time. Connecting the elastic was the only thing I wanted to improve upon so I started stitching down the ends instead of sewing them together. I like your idea! Thank you so much for helping us help others!

You are so generous with your time! Thank you. Someone may have already suggested this . . . Dollar Tree sells 2-packs of (food) cutting mats. They make great template material. Since you can see through, just lay on pattern and trace with permanent marker. Thin enough to be cut with household scissors. (NOT my sewing scissors!) Make any notes and won’t fade or tear. (Not my idea so I can say it’s brilliant) P. S. Hope you are well. These are scary times. Just give us a smile.

Thanks, Gina! This video clarified things. I have made many masks and the elastic is always a pain....this is a game changer! The chain piecing is a lot faster than what I have been doing as well. It will help with the tedium of making many masks! Videos about little tips are always my favourite! :-)

I replied to someone else, but I was having the same issue with the elastic. Purchase some gorilla glue at CVS. Yellow top with a brush and spout combo. Brush is like what is in nail polish. I brushed a bit on the end of my elastic and pinched it together for a few short seconds. I secured with my fabric clips/quilting clips to be extra certain it's stick. The elastic is sticking together very well. I pulled hard and it didn't separate. I secured several elastics before sewing masks tonight and this was a game-changer! As is this new hack in the video. I still think I'll stick with the glue though.

Excellent tutorial! (Thank you.) Have been making similar to donate to those who express a desire for one however for installation of the elastics have found that by 'not' sewing the elastics in and threading them through the pocket/channel (at the ends of the mask with instructions to knot and tuck in) ; it allows 'each wearer' to adjust for fit and comfort. Also shall mention am using 1/8" width however have noticed when it comes to different brands not all elastic is equal in stretching properties. Footnote: For those who might wish to do the same; ensure you add additional length for knotting.

Thank you - I've been following your method for making masks. I've made a little improvement... When I top stitch I make the top edge 1/2" so I can slot in the wire thing. Then I pinning both sides of the wire (so I don't sow over it & break my needle). I stitch back a forth a little at each side to lock it in place... Hope this makes sense... I am looking for another design of mask to make - am a visually impaired beginner in sewing. I am sp very happy to have come across your video and thank you for the different sizes. My husband needs a very large face mask and I need a smaller one. I do like how you incorporated your elastics. Since no two heads are the same when going different sizes, I would pin in the elastics first, have the person the mask is being made for try it on for a proper fit to ears and then complete. Elastics should then be the same for each size. At least the masks my Sister made us that way seemed to fit across the board that way with maybe a little variance.

For those of you making masks, keep in mind that a metal nosepiece is needed for people who wear glasses to prevent fogging of their glasses. I use a 4" piece of plastic coated sturdy electrical wire and this length provides a good fit to the face to prevent fogging.
