And I agree with you: why the heck would you put the new tires on the rear of a front-wheel drive vehicle. Makes no sense!! Good mechanic story. I had a squeal in the front of my 98 Honda CRV. Thanks Scotty. I bought my first front wheel drive car in 1981, and noticed the physics of driving changed, and I had to rethink everything I knew in the past about driving. Driving habits were easy to relearn, but maintenance was a learning experience. Every other oil change balance and rotate tires. Rear tires straight forward, R/front to L/rear, and L/front to L/ rear. 90% of tire related problems resolved.

I understand that the whole "better tires in rear" thing came from a lawsuit where someone spun out on a curve. The lawyers got a settlement from the shop that put the better tires in front, "causing the accident." So, shops put the better tires in the rear because the lawyers have decreed it. I have had to sign a waver to get my better tires placed up front. [I buy 4 tires at once, rotate them as appropriate.]

You're absolutely right. A tire shop should not dictate where you want your new tires. The reason they want the newest tires on the rear is so the rear doesn't wash out in foul weather causing someone to lose control. It's promoted as safety but I personally think they want you to buy four instead of two. Btw I installed tires for over 10 years.
@copperhamster
4 жыл бұрын
I've had that tire argument. Those rear tires on most cars are just hanging around back there keeping the rear end from dragging on the ground... Heck I used to have them put the best tires on the front of my rear drive cars, because the front is pointing the car around and taking most of the brake loading. I think "We put the best tires on the rear" is just so they can sell you the other pair sooner for the front, or get you to bring it in to find the shimmy or whatever. One other thing that can affect your braking/steering a bit; if you had a leak and patched it with that flat fixer goop, it can possibly put that tire a bit out of balance. Not much but it doesn't take much on a lot of cars.

In the North on Icy or Wet roads you want the better tires on the rear. My neighbor is a tow truck driver and has been for 35+ years and the people that put better tires on the front are the ones totaling their car because the car spins out due to lack of rear traction causing it to fish tail. When the back comes around there is nothing you can do because the front has too much traction. Most of the weight in any vehicle is in the front over the front wheels so yeah you might not get up to speed as fast but when you hit the brakes the good rear tires will still stop straight by pulling the rear straight.

I had a similar issue with my Snow tires. they would slip more than usual. I. had put the “Better” tires on the rear but spent the whole season spinning on takeoff. Next season I move put the good tires on the front. No more spinning and no fishtailing unless I used the parking brake.

Scotty, when rotating tires and having to lift the tires up to get them onto the lugs, I use a shovel to raise/lever the tires upward a few inches to slip them onto the lugs. Put the shovel blade under the tire and push down on the handle and the tire raises up into place with little effort. It works. There’s a new video you should make, “how to change a tire with a shovel.”

5:05 as a tech working at Discount Tire, we always put brand new tires on the back because lowers the chance of hydroplaning in wet conditions. After they are “broken in” it doesn’t really matter to us. If the customer wants them on the front though, we put them on the front. It’s a stupid “policy” to not do what the customer asked for (if it’s within reason, of course).

I work in a car garage in the UK when we are putting new tyres on a car they go to the front if its front wheel drive or rear if its RWD. Its a known fact that if you put the new ones on the rear and the worn ones on the front of a FWD car they'll wear out quicker same with new to front on RWD cars, that way these other garages around can sell them new tyres quicker. Personally I think that's wrong when other garages do that squeezing people dry years ago it happened to my mother when I was a kid. The idea of "best tires in the rear" isn't only for RWD vehicles, as some suggested. I live in a cold weather state and the reason they put the good tires on the rear is to stop conditions of over steer. Your average driver isn't cornering, planning for their rear end to slide out behind them. They don't drift often. Tire people figure that under steer and a lack of acceleration will make it obvious to the driver that they need to proceed cautiously. But if you are aware that your rear end could slide out from behind you, you might prefer the better braking, over steer, and acceleration. 🤷♂️
@wilkas159
4 жыл бұрын
No mater what, it is always better put better tires in front. Because it`s much easier to control or stabilize your car when rear is sliding if front of your car is sliding so its gonna be much harder to regain control.

Yes Scotty, it is better to put new tires in the back if your only buying 2 if you live somewhere it rains a lot those new tires will prevent your car from hydroplaning on the interstate and causing an accident. Putting them on the front will of course give you better traction and improved handling, but the older tires in the back will not hold on as long and will cause you to spin out if its wet or snowy out. But ultimately its better to have 4 good well taken care of tires so you know the threshold of your vehicle so you can adjust accordingly to the road conditions.

*It's actually SAFETY Issue.* If you have more traction in the back (newer tires), worst thing that can happen is that your car will understeer (plow head on) to a pole, in a snow storm. 💃👀🙋 But if you put the Newer tire in the front, when you have balding tire in the back, you will spinout (oversteer) in to a Deep ditch like James Caan in the Movie MISERY, and be kidnapped and have your both of your ankles hobbled,,, 😱😵😨😭🙏

@STONE69_

@John Smith when you criss cross, you are reversing the Direction that the tire was originally going in and when you do that, it can cause unwanted vibration. Its best to do front to back and back to front, half way of life of the tires. Plus they just want to take wheels off so they can try to sell you unnesesary brake jobs and other things. Never go to cheapie oil change places that state they will do all this extra work for free, its not free. They just want to sell sell sell.

I`m an old disabled mechanic and agree fully. In the old days many would put 28 psi in the front tires and 32psi in the back and i always told them they are nuts because the back of the car or pickup is empty and the front has an engine that weighs a few hundred pounds, and that when you are stopping the weight shifts to the front and that will hundreds of times more weight because of speed than the actual weight of the car at rest. I run even air and max stated on the tires.

That and improperly torqued, or not torqued lug nuts....cough...cough...Les Schwab Tire loves to over torque or not torque your lug nuts...they also love to not tighten down castle nuts after doing a front hub & bearing job, and if they do torque the lug nuts there's a 100% chance they did them way too tight so if you have a flat there's no chance in hell you are breaking them loose without snapping the studs off.

If rotors were warped you would get a vibration all the time not just when braking. It is actually called lateral run-out due to friction variation. Brake and front end magazine has some good articles.
@CoolSteve08
4 жыл бұрын
@@miketaylor4162 depends on how warped they are. If they are only warped sideways (horizontally) and not vertically you wouldn't necessarily feel it all the time until you're braking. Because braking puts pressure on the rotors and the warping causes the pads to jump in and out as they go over the bumpy bits on the rotor surface. This would also cause uneven braking on all affected rotors which would cause the steering to feel weird when braking if the fronts were affected.

Hi Scotty, the same idea you mentioned exists here in Scotland regarding tyres with the greater tread depth being on the rear; regardless of FWD, RWD, AWD or 4x4. Being an advanced automotive engineer & prohibition officer I can understand the theory with regard to less chance of oversteer during cornering on a wet road surface (it rains a lot here!) given that the greater tread depth on the rear will disperse water quicker, thus less chance of going sideways into a tree or any other immovable object :-( I'm not a mechanic, I work for local Government vehicle enforcement and this has been debated over here for God knows how long now. With my own car I do exactly the same as you; rotate the wheels but mostly for the cost implications so as they all get even wear. I love your channel and keep it up.

Steve Gibson. I think you have found the problem. Another disc split on the braking surface, that was easy to see. Most frequently strange feel is broken belting in the tyre, so swapping front back is a good test. Tyres have manufacturing date stamp, the grip goes down around 5 years old, so strongly consider changing, regardless of tread wear.
@wholeNwon

@@jimwoods9551 To be honest, I've never heard of the problem, esp. on different rotors. When you replaced them, did you check the lug nuts' torque? Were they factory rotors or replacements from the same maker? Google for similar issues others might have had concerning them? As to aging effects on tires, it's somewhat climate-dependent. In my area, I would go 10 years unless unusual wear, cracking, etc. were detected. I've had only one tire slip a belt and another shred a steel belt internally many years before. That was impressive.

No one denies that newer tyres perform better at the front. The point is, come an emergency situation Scottie’s customers will have oversteering rather than understeering cars. The average driver can control and understand understeer better than oversteer. Those are the facts pure and simple. And Scottie can get as mad as he likes but that’s the reason for most companies ‘nonsense’ policy, as he calls it.
