Greg Bencal was my classmate in 1971 when I was in Marine Engineering School, and he asked if I could write some music to fit some lyrics he wrote. I changed a few things, but most of the lyrics in this recording of Tired Man’s Holiday are the same ones Greg wrote.
In order to record my original songs, I use multi-track recording technology to play each of the parts at a separate time by listening to a part recorded earlier. In many of my songs, I record the first track playing a keyboard part. The next step is to play guitar, bass, or other instruments on the second track while listening to the first track.
By continuing to add a third, fourth, and more tracks for different parts, I am able to make a recording by myself even though it may sound like a group of musicians playing and singing together. In many cases, most or even all of the earliest recorded tracks are completely replaced by playing other instruments on tracks recorded later.
Recording songs this way takes a lot of time and effort, and lots of trial and error, but it truly is a labor of love.
