wow, a MOD player on the normal Mega Drive! the one I saw before was on the Mega CD.

I've just uploaded a video of this MDMOD player playing the MODs that make up off1k's 'Amiga Music: Jungle / Drum & Bass Compilation #2', a few cTrix / H0ffman / cTrix & H0ffman MODs, and the Sidewinder MODs that make up the DX-Ball 2 Complete Soundtrack. Some playback issues, but still quite impressive!

So is this software mixing the 4 channels and then playing the result out of channel 6 of the Yamaha chip?

I wonder how much CPU or interrupt time would be left for an actual game with this tech... Would there be any advantage from overclocking the Z80 with the hidden registers?
@kabuto3907
Жыл бұрын
The mixer itself needs roughly 90% of CPU time, the ProTracker code needs a few % for interpreting MOD files, and your game would need to get along with whatever is left. Overclocking the Z80 would not help since all mixing and stuff is done by the 68k, the Z80 is only responsible of feeding the sound chip with fresh samples from its buffer and working around the ladder effect.

there are actual Genesis games that do use PCM software mixing in their sound drivers but their PCM playback functions are *greatly* simplified compared to this MOD player to save on 68k CPU use. (basically all software PCM drivers used in games fill the Z80 to 100%) Usually one-shots for percussion + 2 or 3 SFX reserve channels are all you need anyway, especially since most composers only use a single PCM channel and solely for percussion one-shots. MDSDRV, XGM2, and the SGDK’s 4-channel PCM driver are all game-ready drivers that support multi-channel PCM software mixing, the latter of which was used in Life On Earth: Reimagined. Xeno Crisis uses a modified version of the first XGM driver.

Wow an Eggman's easter egg.... but not on this cart. Not on the MegaSD then?... I'm going to try on the Mega Everdrive. If it needs the Mega Evedrive pro, I hope it's full of tits with high frame rate and 3D glasses! Works perfectly on the Mega SG with a MegaSD by the way. Huge respect again for all you do guys!

Is there also an unpacked release of the musicdisk? Would like to compare the ProTracker playback on the Amiga with the Sega MegaDrive output. Someone mentioned the MD output is 'ass', so curious how much this is true.

No plans to release an unpacked version ourselves, but you can find some of the tracks on ModArchive. And real Amiga definitely sounds better, a software mixer on an old CPU can't beat dedicated hardware.

I wonder how much is tweakble to get a similar player as PT1210, but on the MegaDrive. Though, 90% CPU time for the mixer is quite a lot. How much is it possible to optimize this? Would targeting the MegaCD 68K or overclocking work?

Regarding DJing / PT1210: PT1210-like features would definitely be possible, they would not even need much CPU time, but I don't really see the point... Amiga has better sound quality and it's easier to control with 80-ish keys compared to D-Pad + 4 or 8 buttons on a MD controller. I'm not a DJ so I don't know what features would be needed and how to map them. But I'm interested to hear what other people think about this :) Regarding Mega CD: possible but playing from CD (instead of ROM) would mean no playback of MODs that don't fit into RAM (512 KB minus player size) as MOD playback needs random access so no streaming from CD, and of course some seconds of load time from CD for each new track. Regarding OC: I don't see the point either - for improving sound quality you'd probably need at least a 60% CPU speed boost before it would pay, the mixer output rate can't be changed arbitrarily due to hardware limitations.
