As a lawyer (albeit not one specialised in intellectual property), I frankly don’t think BlackBerry could patent the Alt and Caps keys placement, since it’s part of a standard qwerty keyboard design: there would be no merit, legally speaking, in a patent that simply aims to protect that same design on a smaller scale. It’s as if I tried to copyright a miniaturised guitar fretboard! Besides, every qwerty phone ever produced had the same standard keys placement, from Nokia to Palm devices. Therefore, I believe Unihertz made this choice for other reasons. Specifically, they probably wanted to differentiate themselves and exploit the non-screen real estate as best as they could (they didn’t want a semi-empty belt around the fingerprint sensor). Think of the BB Passport, it did not have any modifier keys but nobody complained since the software took care everything. Basically, Unihertz created a hybrid Passport-Q10 keyboard in order to optimise space and appeal to both audiences, at the cost, of course, of a more comfortable typing experience. That said, I’m not sure I’ll use the alt and caps keys often, since I didn’t on the Priv either.

As a "data user" I want to make calls, text, message, tweet, read pdf's & even spreadsheets etc. A poor camera doesn't matter as long as quick snaps of QR codes & receipts can be done. I don't take selfies, play games, stream films (or listen to music much - I want the phone to do WORK & communicate on. I just can't decide which Titan to buy. I've used several BB's over the years & love using BB's swipeable keyboard; easy to scroll and no accidental pressing of links. I currently have a BB Key 2 but no longer get updates from BB & am running Android 8. So, the Titan Slim is appealing, the Pocket looks good but screen size may be a step backwards from the Key2 and the Titan, whilst rugged with IP67 & great battery life just looks too big to carry around without a belt clip or holster. These Unihertz models all have great appeal depending on what we need but my concerns are: warranty, service, regular updates, security, & whether it will work in the U.K with my Provider (EE) and.... it has NO 5G. The £330 ($300) price tag makes it viable to purchase outright....so tempting. Perhaps I can wait another year and Unihertz will address these things...

oh lord i have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, it's VERY exciting to see kickstarted startup phone manufacturers succeed and thrive, and especially for a much desired but niche feature like physical keyboards! and especially for such a great price! but oh, the sacrifices. the weird keyboard layout. the nonstandard aspect ratio that is BOUND to cause issues with so, so many apps. the shit camera, subpar specs, and lack of wireless charging. it makes it feel like an old person communication device, like a kick to the whole pocket-computer idea we've come to know and love. I absolutely would pay more for a mechanical keyboard phone with specs comparable to at least kinda the cheap versions of new release phones, or maybe a gen or two back. and for the love of god, if you're making the phone THICC anyways, why not just make they keyboard slideout? you can have all the same features on it, and potentially even a larger keyboard with more buttons, without sacrificing the screen real estate! please!!

I just ordered one from Kickstarter and this being my first purchase from a company that I have followed since they launched Jelly, I am sooo excited to get this in my hands. I must mention that being from India does make it impossible to order from Kickstarter. So I have ordered one at Japan and wait for my friend to bring it when he comes to India. I just hope its worth all the wait and efforts.

the only problem with today smartphones is that they have reached over and expanded to useless time consumption. Phones like blackberry that are very much like a personal assistant really help you through the day without wasting too much time on them

You know, I can respect a phone that knows what it wants to do and doesn't try to be the phone equivalent of a swiss army knife. If it's one thing I've missed for a while, it's these kinds of more focused devices that have a specific use in mind, rather than the, in my opinion, quite bland jack-of-all-trades that most phones try to be.

At this point we are all used to holding a smartphone. But for me I still wish to live in moments of 2005. When we had psp, mp3 players, or who knows about pocket bell. You answered my question in this video of using both old school and new school phone to our hands.

Same. I'm also stuck in the 2000s and I will be until the day I die.

Would you happen to be interested in doing a retro review on HTC Desire Z? To this day that was the best physical keyboard phone I've ever used. The keyboard design was amazing, I could type on that thing with lightning speed. It was so good that even with my touch screen phones I still miss the Z keyboard very dearly.
