For me, Ruffo and Granforte were the best baritones in history. This recording is perfection. Incredible how the F has exactly the same color as the rest. That's how it's supposed to be. He never loses the beauty and the line. No baritone of today can do this.

Agreed about Ruffo. I would add MacNeil in his prime. I also like Basiola when he was on his game. Fantastic singing.

I'd add Bastianini and Straciari. But Ruffo wrote the best book. Do yourself a favor read his book - 'Mia Parabola'. The best book about an opera singer ever written.

Magnificent! The mask this man had! And the fine thread of pianissimo when required. Am I wrong to say that this voice would be somewhat wasted on Rossini´s Figaro, judging from the photo? In my ear ears he sounds absolutely Verdian.

He could sing anything though. His voice was enormous but nonetheless extremely flexible.
