Many years ago as an apprentice auto electrician, we did work for FJ Walkers, the company that delivered perishable products for the food industry. My boss got a call from their transport manager that the oldest vehicle in the fleet (diesel bedford) had just spat the belts off the alternator because of seized bearings. The only drama was I had to get under the thing in the middle of Canterbury Rd with traffic flying past at what seemed like a hundred miles an hour.

I did similar with a 1976 diesel 4-pot. Was a bit heavy on the handlebars and had to nip up the rear brakes regularly otherwise it did a front wheelie! Fitted a 5t Trewhella winch & some heavy plate and it drove lovely. Good luck!

The motor looks to be the old Chev 292. I use to work on these back in the early 80's. To lift the cab off is no big issue, use to do it often to replace the motor. This brings back memories. Most of our TK's had the 292 chev petrol or the diesel in them. I think the diesel was 300ci.

The engine in the crate is a 292. The fuel pump is in the middle directly under the gap in the sideplates the 250 has it mounted closer to the dizzy.

It's a 292 Chevy. The visual difference is the size if the side cover. The larger one is the 292.

If your heading through Darkan , that’s roughly where, the 10 bedfords are lining the driveway .will get a precise location once I’m down there, or head to Pearce airbase, that gentleman has them lining his driveway also.

That's not a Bedford engine, it should have a 214 in it, which has a full sideplate. If it had 20'' wheels it could've had a 300, and that's certainly not a 300.

I have a 75 tk Bedford factory fitted with the 250ci chev six. 16inch wheels. I believe the 20in wheel trucks had the 292. Not sure when the stopped using the Bedford engine. Edit. I've since found out it's the 292. Taller sideplates and the fuel pump is mounted in the centre under the gap in the sideplates.

Just looking at the side view you might be able to use a left and right front mudguard together to make a flared guard for the tub, that will keep side, rear and front views a bit more symmetrical and period correct. Means you will need two more sets if you can find them. Email ACW in Victoria and he has a wealth of knowledge and restores them. Looks like you had a two speed diff which the higher ratio will be around 5.2:1 with a 4 speed auto it will do hwy speeds no worries. By the way the ranger tub shows how small the old Beddy's really are.

I drove these back in the day they were a good workhorse, I like it its not as tho they are really rare. It's his truck he can do what he likes regardless of what anyone else thinks.
