In 1999, Tooske, the host of The Music Factory, conducted an interview with TLC, the iconic American girl group. TLC, originally formed in 1990 in Atlanta, Georgia, consisted of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. The group had achieved immense success throughout the 1990s, with an impressive string of top-ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including chart-topping singles like "Creep," "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs," and "Unpretty." Their albums, such as the multi-platinum CrazySexyCool (1994), garnered critical acclaim and commercial success, with the latter even receiving a diamond certification from the RIAA.
TLC's achievements extended beyond the United States, as they became the first R&B group to receive the Million certification from the RIAJ in Japan for their album FanMail (1999). With over 72 million records sold worldwide, TLC remains one of the best-selling American girl groups. Their impact and talent were recognized by VH1, who ranked them as the greatest female group, and Billboard magazine, who acknowledged them as one of the greatest musical trios. Additionally, TLC received numerous accolades, including Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards.
In 2013, TLC received the Legend Award at the MTV Video Music Awards Japan and the Outstanding Contribution to Music award at the 17th MOBO Awards, acknowledging their enduring legacy and impact on the music industry. Despite the tragic loss of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes in 2002, TLC decided to continue as a duo, releasing their fifth self-titled album in 2017. In recognition of their significant contributions, the group was inducted into the Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame in 2022, solidifying their place as music icons.
