This is what I've been looking for from Every interview with you that I've watched. An educated incite into tech companies as well plenty of brainstorming from you. It's helping me learn how to look at existing situations from different perspectives than those in which I've been trained.

Loved it, at times the tangents seemed chaotic but they added much context, good lateral parallels. Two hours of my life not wasted. Thank you.

This might be the one podcast where timestamps arent needed. Exceptional. Had to stay on 1x too and just absorb, always a good sign.

Your statement concerning seeing shortages ahead of time reminds me of the Texas supermarket chain H.E.B.. They have to go through a lot of data and analysis to know what to carry, what to store, and who they’ll order it from, which I’m sure most grocery stores do, but a glimpse into their analysis that was briefly covered when flooding hit Houston and south Texas was fascinating.

Amazing talk! From centuries ago small stores and family business have been a core for a city. So great that Shopify helps to go other the strange bank’s approach of lending to startups and having restrictions to local businesses.

I find it very interesting that Balaji chose to bring out Shopify on the podcast. I mean it in a sense that Shopify is building out a platform to help retailers efficiently build their business. While at the same time Shopify is taking care of many of the unimportant and somewhat tedious regulatory and financial tasks needed for any enthusiastic startup. Because the truth is, The less stuff the entrepreneur needs to think about, the more time and attention they can focus on their brand and business. As this relates to nation states, a properly functioning business should be a microcosm of a properly functioning government. And so if shopify can build regulatory and operational efficiencies for the businesses they serve. The served business will ultimately be able to thrive in more unincumbered way in the retail environment.

I hear Tobi's point on the that the only fidelity that he can communicate to the whole company is on a "fortune cookie basis" and the risk inherent with each employee unpacking the fortune cookies in isolation. I couldn't agree with this more, but I can't reconcile this with why I never see founders openly talk about that each incremental hire is a net negative to the company (at least from this point of view)

This is great! 💥Let's get more practical/pragmatic solutions going here. We and others have been working on building our own network state-ish model and are actively seeking out collaborators to keep the momentum going. We need to bridge the gap between your high-altitude conceptualization and real world solutions to satisfy the demand. The rubber is hitting the road here...we need engagement and support! 🛠🏗
