Richard, Good stuff as usual. I'm less than 1 yr into my part time job at the saw shop but one of my early repairs was on the brake system, handles and bands. I looked at the spring and said that's just a old school drum brake style spring and I fashioned my own set of spring R&R tools based on the drum brake plier tool rather than asst. cuss words to do it. And I'm on my first bench job on an HT101 using my custom built saw/pole holder instead of fighting that 8' monster on my bench. greetings from Darlington SC. Gary

About two years ago it got a major over haul. New handle, plastics, wear parts, etc. Lol!! I was pretty shocked when I saw how beat up it was.

Richard thanks for the video and you almost got to the part that I needed to see and that was the fit of the clutch bell on the clutch itself. I’m working on an old 034, in perfect condition, and when I drop the drum on and line up the oiler in the slot, it spins freely but when I seat in to get clearance for the outer washer and the E-clip it feels like it’s runs up on either the shoes or maybe the 19mm bolt head on the spider. Makes the chain spin no matter how low I set the idle. I removed the inner dust washer thinking it was that but no luck. Any help would be appreciated. BTW, it pleases me to say you were 100% right on you filing video you did some time back. I did what you said, and once I got rid of about half a dozen old files, my saws were running right and square. Thank you for making me get over my hoarding of old round files!

Are any of the parts aftermarket? Double check the worm gear part number if it's original. It should have 1125 on it.

@@richardflagg3084 thanks for the reply. I replaced clutch drum with a kit that used a rim drive. The Stihl kit number ended with 1041, I can get more numbers when I get to the saw. The kit came with the drum, new improved needle bearing and the 7 pin rim. It was apparently a direct replacement of what the old “small spline” drum that it was purchased with originally.

@@ericglaude4953 You might be on to something there. I'm unaware of a drum kit for those saws that isn't of the small spline variety. That would be nice. Keep me posted.

@@richardflagg3084 I think your right about the kit. Too bad there are few Stihl dealers that can do much more than look at a computer screen. Unfortunately I tossed the old drum in the scrap pile and traded that in for just about enough for a case of beer. The good kind of beer! 😂

I had a similar issue, mine was that the little magnesium steps / seats around the outside circumference of the brake band that hold the brake band in its round orientation had worn down so it no longer was kept round like that. I can see your’s are the same and worn down. If you get a screwdriver and gently press the brake band in toward the crank shaft by a tiny bit at the 6 o-clock position around the clutch (as those little steps should, it will correct itself and sit as it should. I’d be keen to hear how you go. The only fix for that is a new case half or get creative with Jb putty and build them up again. Currently it’s not round it’s oval around the clutch drum. Does that make sense? Edit: I can see you have 6 steps spaced around the band that you’ll see are worn.

Have you ever seen an oil pump leak enough to smoke a clutch? Brand new 500i needed a clutch at around 15-20 hours. My son was learning to run it (first saw over 45cc) and I had the chain to aggressive for him learning so it was more than oil that smoked the clutch. The oil and dust was unbelievably thick behind the clutch. It was so thick that I had a hard time removing the clutch drum. I’ve never seen anything like that but I’ve only been through a few dozen saws. The gear looked like it was installed right and I couldn’t tell at all where the leak was. There’s probably close to a hundred hours on it now, we’ve cleaned it a few times but it’s been clean, just dust and very very slight amount of oil in the dust. We still don’t trust it because we didn’t actually find the problem.

Try a new oil line (oil pick up from the tank). Very common on the pro models to loose their seal and weap. You'll see a big difference when you take the old one off and compare it to the new one.

@@richardflagg3084 Thanks! That makes sense. I’ll pick up a new oil line or two, it’s probably heat that kills those. I started using Amsoil Bar & Chain Oil when I changed the clutch. That stuff is so adhesive, stickiest stuff I’ve ever seen! I turned the oiler way down halfway through the first tank of bar oil after the new clutch. The old bar oil was thinner cheap stuff from Lowe’s. I put a WCS clutch cover on it at the same time and that seemed to help drop temperatures in the clutch area. We’re cutting through a lot of scrub oak with soft spots that make a real thick very large grain sawdust. This sawdust has stopped the chain on the 500 with the old clutch cover, we were constantly cleaning it. That makes sense, I bet it was getting toasty under that old clutch cover. The WCS clutch cover stays a lot cleaner. I was a heavy equipment technician and did a lot of Root Cause Analysis/Failure Analysis. To me something isn’t fixed just because the problem went away or is a lot less than what it was.

A rich did you ever hear are using two-stroke oil mix for a lubricant for the needle bearing a steel dealer recommended using it so do use the steel ultra I don’t know what do you think

To put it lightly, I'm not a fan of Ultra. Have a look at some of my videos I've made regarding Ultra. Lol. As infrequent as the clutch drum comes off I prefer to use grease.

Thanks Richard enjoy your videos yeah the seal dealer wasn’t very happy when I told him I was using saber at 40-1. I also add a little Amsoil quick shot to the non-ethanol gas with a little Amsoil octane boost to a little more bang for the buck what do you think. Thanks for the reply and have a good day. And as far as the needle bearing I was going to put the Amsoil saber on it ! And the saw that I purchased was an MS 261 carburetors saw with a 20 inch bar I’m only 66 years old with a bad back went with a little saw and for what it is it runs great so far have a great day brother🙏⛳️
