Reading 1: Acts 1:15-17, 20-26
Resp: PS 113:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
Gospel: John 15:9-17
Feast of Saint Matthias, Apostle
Lectionary: 564
Reading 1: Acts 1:15-17, 20-26
In those days, Peter, standing up among the brothers (now the crowd of people together numbered about one hundred and twenty), said: “Brothers, the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. He was numbered among us and was allotted his share in this ministry. For it is written in the Book of Psalms: ‘May his place be deserted; let there be no one to dwell in it,’ and ‘May another take his place of leadership.’
Therefore, it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, beginning from John’s baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection.” So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen to take over this apostolic ministry, which Judas left to go where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias; so he was added to the eleven apostles.
Responsorial Psalm: PS 113:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8
R. (8) The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
Praise the Lord, you children: praise the name of the Lord. Blessed be the name of the Lord, from now and forever.
R. The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
From the rising of the sun to the place where it sets, the name of the Lord is to be praised. The Lord is exalted over all the nations; his glory above the heavens.
R. The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, And looks upon the heavens and the earth?
R. The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
Raising the poor from the dust, and lifting the needy from the ash heap, To seat them with princes, with the princes of his people.
R. The Lord will give him a seat with the leaders of his people.
Alleluia: See Jn 15:16
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
I chose you from the world, to go and
bear fruit that will last, says the Lord.
R. Alleluia, alleluia.
Gospel: John 15:9-17
Jesus said to his disciples: “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my precepts, you shall abide in my love, just as I also have kept my Father’s precepts and I abide in his love."
"These things I have spoken to you, so that my joy may be in you, and your joy may be fulfilled. This is my precept: that you love one another, just as I have loved you. No one has a greater love than this: that he lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends, if you do what I instruct you. I will no longer call you servants, for the servant does not know what his Lord is doing. But I have called you friends, because everything whatsoever that I have heard from my Father, I have made known to you. You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you. And I have appointed you, so that you may go forth and bear fruit, and so that your fruit may last. Then whatever you have asked of the Father in my name, he shall give to you. This I command you: that you love one another."
