TUCKER, ALAN AND TOMMY TALK TO MIKE READ ON SATURDAY SUPERSTORE IN MARCH 1983. THIS INTERVIEW WAS DONE WHEN TUCKERS LUCK FIRST STARTED A SERIES MADE AFTER THE TRIO LEFT GRANGE HILL.
Todd Carty..what a legend.i love how he was so serious and caring about the bad unemployment at that time.i was on a Youth Training Scheme painting and decorating.i got £25 per week. british tv actors work long hours and when an acting part ends they can be out of work for a long time and often they have to sign on the dole. thanks Todd and all of the young actors for entertaining us with great drama during the eighties and onwards.

when he was interviewed in late 2000 for BBC 2's I Love 1984, he explained that it was the YTS aspect and life getting tough for kids, dole etc. that helped attract him to the part.

He was actually born in Ireland and I have always found Todd Carty's accent to be continually changing between irish and London.

He had the Irish accent in this interview and put on the London accent in Grange Hill and Tuckers Luck. However, over the years as he matured and got the part of Eastenders and the Bill, etc... his accent changed to London accent and even now when he is interviewed he has the London accent. So yes, it has changed. It's natural when you live in a particular city for a long period you tend to pick the accent.

He was born in Park Royal west London to Irish parents. He grew up in Kilburn and then South Harrow from the age of 9. I think he is laying the Irish accent on for effect in this interview.

@@ZeldaFitz So was I, born Park Royal 1973. I got Todd's autograph on Church Rd, NW10 while they were filming Tucker's Luck back in either '83 or '84. He was a good bloke. Really nice.

Britain in the 80's might've been bad for the working classes - it was fine for the middle classes as it wasn't middle class jobs under threat. Now, there is less social mobility and most working class characters are played by middle/upper class people.

Tuckers accent here is undoubtedly weird. It sounds kind of an odd mix of north and midlands coupled with a "liddle bid ov smashie and nicey radio DJ. However, he was born and raised in London so the only thing I can think of is that as a young professional actor, not wanting to end up type cast, he took classes to have his accent "softened". It's a very common teqnique in the acting world to neutralise a thick regional accent and make it more generic. Gives you a wider range.

I hated 1983 as a year, I was 14 and stuck in dreaded school and kids of my generation could not at 14 grow up and leave school and find employment like kids of older generations could and did .

deathly silence for a minute when asked about something their mates went through ' unemployment etc' Todd looks at the ground. The characters they portrayed were world's apart from the life they were living, they were highly paid tv actors and not likely to have been hanging around with unemployed layabouts.
