A Colors Creation Production (Tokyo, Japan 2024)
"Ukiyo" is an artwork that is part of the Tokyo Night and Light project. In order to create a new tourist resource and to add color to Tokyo at night, the medium of projection mapping uses the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No. 1, one of Tokyo's landmarks, as a canvas to express a variety of art with light and sound that is shown throughout the year. This cultural project holds a Guinness World Record as the largest architectural projection mapping display (permanent.)
About Ukiyo:
Ukiyo-e is a Japanese traditional art that came to rise during the Edo period. The works depict various aspects of daily life and a time with vivid yet delicate colors. Ukiyo is a concept in Japanese that describes how the world is always changing. Combining these two concepts of "Ukiyo", the work illustrates how the Japanese culture and daily lives have changed over time from Edo up until the present day.
Comments from the Composer, Kourtney Lara Ross
I wanted to bring together the old and the new by composing a soundtrack that used a combination of traditional instrumentation and synthesizers. The beginning of the piece starts with orchestral sounds combined with atmospheric sound design to create themes that give the listeners a feeling of nostalgia. As the work progresses from the Edo period into the future, the instrumentation changes and electronic instrumentation becomes more prominent. I wanted to give the audience a feeling of floating through time. With the different musical themes, give a feeling of flipping through a book. An overview of life from the past to now.
