Tokyo Rush (2019)
1. Shibuya Scramble
2. Yoyogi Tree Tunnel
3. Street Performers at Ueno Park
New music is unique in its power to voice our mood and emotions, reflecting the world as we know it today. But in composing new music for traditional instruments, one confronts the question: do traditional instruments belong to the past or present? Can they perform music which rises to the complexity of a modern city like Tokyo, with its hurtling rush hours, maze-like tunnels and multi-tasking commuters? What of the magical ambience of a forested path leading to Meiji Shrine, or the energy of Ueno Park with its street musicians, young lovers and Sunday families?
Tokyo Rush depicts three scenes, honoring the city’s polyrhythms, wooded sanctuaries, and joyful encounters. What better instruments to reveal the beauty and paradox which inhabit this concrete jungle.
