In my head the line "use my best colors for your portrait" is basically saying I always make sure that I am making you out as good person when i talk about you.

really interesting, when i think of the line "use my best colors for your portrait" i immediately think of how, when i was younger and i was gifted a new set of crayons (while i still had some old ones), if i drew a picture of my family i would color-in my dad, sister and myself with the old crayons, but i would use the new ones to draw and color my mom, as a sign of love and respect. so in retrospect, i was using my very "best colors" for her "portrait", that just shows my deep reverence for her.

I don't know why, but hearing this song I immediately envisioned a couple from an older time. All the wife does before was please their husband. They wait at the door til they come home because their only place was at home, or in the kitchen. Not allowed to work or go to school. They were not allowed to complain, and lived just to make sure the guy is satisfied. I just see a wife waiting and upset her whole life. And the end of the song, it shows courage because before girls were not even allowed to leave their husband. They will be judged and shame - and most importantly, since they were deprived of work and education, a lot of women even decided to stay because where will they go. How will they support themselves. So it's like a prison even when the guy is violent, cheating, etc. I suddey imagined this because of the washing dishes and setting up the table lines. It made me cry so much when I was picturing this. 😭😭😭

I will never get over the complexity of the line "took this dagger in me and removed it" Bc like When you get stabbed it hurts... BUT then the knife that is inside of you is now what is keeping you alive for a longer time. Yeah sure eventually you'll still die but keeping the dagger inside the wound keep you alive for longer. So taking it out doesn't mean you will heal and get better, taking the dagger out means you are letting yourself bleed to death. I fucking love that line. Letting go of that toxic relationship is good bc you are leaving that but at the same time it will still hurt you to get rid of them, bc while they hurt you- you still need them in your life.

Music is all subjective, Taylor Swift said she was inspired by the book Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. When I first heard the song I don't think I necessarily thought of only one type of relationship. I mostly pictured an age difference and an imbalance of power, whether that relationship was romantic, friendship, or parent and child.

I had a very dysfunctional relationship with my mother (until she eventually kicked me out when I was 18) and this song just hits it right where it hurts. I did everything and was just tolerated, which, to me, is worst than someone being straight forward and saying they don’t like you.

I think the analogy of the puppy is exactly the vibes I get. someone who has been with a narcissist becomes very observant of mood shifts, people pleasers are the most observant. "if it's all in my head..." - gives me the impression that outwardly, they seem like a perfect couple... but she feels something off. the "wait by the door like I'm just a kid..." makes me think of innocence and naivete, kids love and hurt BIG, they don't care about what should or shouldn't be, they just love everything about you. that child-like bliss. makes me feel like they were happy at first, the partner stopped trying to make the relationship special and it's suddenly all one sided. she feels "crazy" but deep down, knows that something is missing. "tell me I've got it wrong somehow" she's pleading with them to have some logical explanation, because she can't believe this us where it's ended up.

Oh I definitely agree with you that it seems like the guy she's talking about is a narcissist. I feel for anyone who is made to think they are not enough no matter how hard they try to be what that person wants, even losing themselves in the process. What absolutely breaks my heart is that in the bridge she's describing a fantasy of breaking free from that relationship and trying to convince herself ("believe me I could do it") but then in the end of the song she repeats what she said in the beginning ("I sit and watch you") indicating that she hasn't gone through with leaving. No happy ending, she's still watching him and contemplating it. At least she came to a point that she realizes her love should be celebrated, because many don't think they deserve that when a narcissist diminishes their self worth. "Made you my temple my mural my sky" reminds me of a lyric from a song called Walls: "For every question why you were my because" about realizing how toxic it is that you were giving your everything to someone and they weren't giving that same energy back. That person is almost indifferent about it. And indifference can be more painful than outright hatred.

Slightly annoyed by the comments constantly telling you your interpretation is wrong. Like, the whole point of music is that it's specific and cathartic to the writer but interpretted differently by millions so it's cathartic to an entire fanbase. Reading lyrics shouldn't be turned into a pop quiz about the artists life
@stevenstewart782

I agree but unfortunately Taylor brought that on herself by admitting her songs were like Diaries even though she said it wasn't all of her songs people hear what they want to hear so now they're dissecting every single song past present and future😥

@jimena.the.swiftie

@@char4980 actually, his interpretation is pretty valid, and might even be correct, you never know what taylor was thinking when writing this song. eg. when i think of the line "use my best colors for your portrait" i immediately think of how, when i was younger and i was gifted a new set of crayons (while i still had some old ones), if i drew a picture of my family i would color my dad, sister and myself with the old crayons, but i would use the new ones to draw and color my mom, as a sign of love and respect. so in retrospect, i was using my very best colors for her portrait, that just shows how much i admired her. so his interpretation of a "child coloring" isn't that far off

the lyrics sort of remind me of like, a queer teen coming out to their parents and just being "tolerated", not "celebrated. to sort of back my theory up, there's an interview where taylor used these words specifically: "*celebrates* [the LGBTQ community] and not just *tolerate* who [they] are", so like, an interesting pov in my opinion

It's that song which makes me imagine one of the fictional pairing I am very emotionally invested in (they have a age gap, so it on brand) and playing it repeatedly whenever I write for them, it gives eveerything an undertone of angst and helps me write some pretty tragic storylines for them lol :D
