After Top Gun hit theaters in 1986, suddenly Tom Cruise’s career went into overdrive. With his next three films, Cruise tried to stretch himself as an actor and prove he was more than just the heartthrob of the moment. The Color of Money, which came out just a few months after Top Gun, would pair him with Paul Newman (in an Oscar- winning performance) and director Martin Scorsese. 1988’s Rain Man would pair him with another veteran actor who would take home an Oscar, Dustin Hoffman, while in between he would make the slick, entertaining drama Cocktail.
In this edition of Tom Cruise Revisited, we examin how these three movies were important to Cruise as both a box office draw and actor, paving a way for his next round of star-movies in the nineties.
