In 1979, was playing in a band in Tokyo and John and Yoko came in. I talked to him and watched him and Yoko for 3 hours. He was more like an innocent child than a rock star. His image is only his image. He spoke in a much higher tone in person. He constantly smoked, ate fruit, kissed Yoko and blurted at the band. He sat with a hostess friend that told me everything they said. Yoko said John was in the best mood she's ever seen him in. When he left, he bowed to us. He was a nice inquisitive guy.

Not very original (or funny) for the legendary Lennon. If somebody had bitch slapped Lennon long ago perhaps his ego would have been in check before making the grave remark about Christ that ultimately got him shot years down the road. A phony and insecure misogamist and bigot he always was more cheeky than was good for him.

George Penwell i am a Christian, but even I still just can't help asking: How do you know that his comment about Christ got him shot later? Chapman was just plain wacko; THAT is the main reason he shot Lennon, whatever his wackadoodle reasons were for doing it. Yes we are judged and reap what we sow, but, it's possible John could have been judged by a bad experience or bad cold or something, long before his death, right? Just something to think about.

Man, Tom Jones has always been one of those musicians I just loved from the get go. Even as a diehard rock fan growing up in the late 60's and 70's, when my dad played Tom Jones, The Fifth Dimension, all of that music I loved it. Jones was always great. This is a great little story.

The amount of times I had to go down to sort fellas out that he had been cheeky to... He was a smart mouth, and I don't mean that as a compliment. He knew all the bouncers would be on his side and he could afford to shoot his mouth off. I knew him for three years, three nights a week. We had to stop people trying to fight him." Now I never thought I'd be a Tom Jones fan but on a whim I went to see him live at the 3000 seat Hammersmith Odeon (now Apollo) a couple of years ago and was totally converted. He had just about the best band I've ever heard behind him and he proved himself one of the best interpreters of songs I've ever heard. The old Las Vegas bullshit has gone. For two-and-a-half hours he went through Rock n roll, gospel, country, a sentimental McCartney song and all stages in between. Believe me me this man loves songs and knows how to sing them. Unfortunately these days he couldn't shake his booty even if he wanted to, though. Stands in one spot and sings with the power and understanding that only a lifetime of singing can bring. Viva Tom!

After reading some of these comments I can't help but laugh. Tom Jones wasn't trying to be more popular than John Lennon or put him down. This is just a reminiscent piece from Tom Jones about his encounters with John Lennon. No where does he come off at trying to put John down or think he's better than John or anyone else for that fact. They are both entertainers and provided good music to their fans that followed them. In other words . . . lighten up.

I am on about the birth of the Stones. The Beatle made them. They first saw them as unknowns in Richmond, liked them as a band and people, and helped them along. Harrison was influential in getting that important DECCA contract and wrote their first hit for them. In those days to get a recording deal was a big thing. The Stones manager was not getting anywhere promoting them from an alcohol free place in Richmond.

In the spring of 1971 John & Yoko came to Syracuse NY and I went down to the hotel where they were staying hoping to catch a glimpse of him. It was late in the evening when he breezed into the lobby with Yoko all in black and made for the elevator. I went to take a picture of him on the elevator before the door closed and the lens cap was still on the camera. (How stupid I know) I looked back at Lennon, who was looking right at me and he said "I'm not Tom Jones ya know" and the door closed.

I lived in Quarry Street, Woolton. 200 yards from Strawberry Fields, also from John's house. I was a senior at John's school. My friends included Peter Shotton, one of the gang, who I met in Cyprus a couple of years ago. The poor guy was crippled with arthritis. I chucked the story in because I thought it might be of some interest, and I've had a very good life thank you. Try some respect to your elders. Lennon is often criticized for being an angry violent man while advocating peace... it can be easy for a person born chemically mellow to advocate peace, but when a person forged to be angry and violent can transcend his nature to reach for peace, that is the person who can teach us something... it has been said that it was the human side of Jesus, not the god side, that is awesome, as it is the human side that must contend with the influences of an earthly world, to walk in a human shoes upon thorns and find kindness toward others... as it has also been said that it is easy to be peaceful at the top of a mountain.

All of these comments are hilarious to me. I read each one and laughed just as hard on each one. I had a feeling that most of the comments were being made by Brits (no offense) because I don't think we Americans have such sharp wit. As I kept reading I noticed the spelling of some words was indeed the English spelling and not the American English spelling. So then, I became convinced that the commenters are indeed from English people and not Americans. I do agree, that John Lennon's sense of humor was a little hard for most Americans to get. If Dick Cavett who is a very bright and witty man had trouble understanding Lennon's humor, then I would have to say the average everyday kind of American would too. By the way, I am a JohnLennon fan and Tom Jones fan. Love them both. And thanks guys for giving me a much needed laugh.

Jones first sang the Blues in England. He grew up on the same staple (American Rhythm & Blues, Rockabilly, New Orleans (Louis Armstrong) Jazz, that John Lennon did. Post-WWII England. He went commercial and cashed in. So what? He has one of the great voices of the 20th century. Lennon fans should not be offended; he did return the OBE. The Beatles got to America first and opened the door for everybody else, Jones included.

Right, Why should we be offended? True Lennon's fans know that JOhn was a little far out in his behavior ... erratic, disrespectful, violent ..... but a genius as an artist. Also people who really knew him have told he was a good friend and he had his light side too. I'm not a JOnes fan, but I think he's pretty cool and I'm sure he probably was a more educated and respectful individual. Great voice also!
