I just finished Tom Lake this week and adored it. About 20 pages in I realized I could trust Ann Patchett wherever she took this story. Also loved Foster.

Anita, I hope you love it! I really do think it's her best...although I need to go back and re-read State of Wonder and Bel Canto. I read the first few pages of Instructions for a Heatwave and I am already hooked.

@@EveningReader When you recommended Rodham, I went out and bought it. I really, really enjoyed that book. You have provided me with some really good recommendations. After reading it I kept trying to get friends to read it, several put it on their Goodreads list. I raved so much about Curtis Sittenfeld two friends went out and bought Romantic Comedy. I have it but I haven’t read it yet.

“Tom Lake” gives us pause to reflect on how much we tell others about ourselves, and how much we choose to keep private. It also raises the question of how much we know about our mother’s life. Do we know her as a well-rounded woman or simply as her role as mother?

I loved Foster. I didn’t love Small Things as much, but still liked it. I may need pick up Tom Lake🥰 My husband was in Our Town in highschool. & I didn’t like the Dutch House either. Just a quick question : are you still wanting to read Ovid Metamorphoses with me? I know we’re planning “Now in November “ in November but I don’t think we settled on when to read Ovid?! I’m trying to get a video recorded today and out because I’m heading out of town again…

Tom Lake is so lovely! Our Town plays a big role in the book. To answer: I am definitely in for Now in November...maybe the Ovid early next year? But if you find a buddy to do it sooner, no worries. 🙂 Have fun out there! It's been lovely seeing your adventures on Instagram!

Gah! I am on the wait list at my library for Tom Lake. I love Patchett. I have not read all of her books, but many of them. The Dutch House is probably my favorite so obviously I think you are crazy. 😂😉 After reading Small Things Like These I read every word Claire Keegan ever published. I envy you your experience of reading Keegan for the first time. Wonderful, concise, beautiful storytelling. Don't give up on Laird Hunt. Read Zorrie. One woman's simple life told sparely but with deep emotion. It is gorgeous. Cheers.

Ha, Nina! I will probably re-read The Dutch House at some point. But I think when you read Tom Lake you will agree it is her best work. You must let me know! I am looking forward to reading Keegan's work. The book store has all her books and I almost went ahead and bought them. As for Laird Hunt, I loved Zorrie! That's why I picked up this latest one. He writes beautifully, so I'll go on to the Evening Road next.

I'm really looking forward to Tom Lake. I'm planning to listen to in on audio and I'll probably get it with my next Libro credit. I haven't read The Dutch House (but I have the audiobook), but Ann Patchett is a bit hit and miss with me. Tom Lake, however, sounds fantastic.

I usually don't do audio books because I get too distracted, but I think I'll have to make an exception with this one because to hear Meryl Streep read it would be amazing. Didn't Tom Hanks read The Dutch House?

I also don't like fairy tale novels but they always have such good covers. It's not fair. Your review of Tom Lake is eroding my willpower to finish some other books before I start it! 😂 I'm interested in reading some more Maggie O'Farrell, too. I have enjoyed my month of mood reading and skipping events but I'm doing shorty September with a vengeance.

Fairy tale novels DO always have such lovely covers. That's how they lure us in so they can bore us to death. I read the first few pages of Instructions for a Heatwave and I already have high, high hopes. I want you to read Tom Lake! I want you to read The Animators! Do what I say! 😂(I am also scared to watch you talk about Mayflies because I think I will be so tempted.)

@@EveningReader I'll make it worse. I found out that Mayflies is totally autobiographical and there's a 2 part BBC movie from last year that isn't readily available in the system but maybe you can find it.

Yes, I loved Keegan's Small Things Like These but that's the only book of hers that I've read so far. I read Instructions for a Heatwave a few years ago and was totally sucked into the story. Hamnet is my favorite O'Farrell but I have yet to read a bad one. The Marriage Portrait is coming up for me in the next few weeks. I definitely want to read for fun. I don't want to work too hard in my reading right now. I think you can have a channel and not participate in everything. Well, that's what I do and I'm sure it affects my subscriptions but I'm okay with that. Tom Lake! I finished yesterday and was sad to be done. The way Patchett masters the slow reveal of Lara's life. Wow. And there were a couple of things that happened that just gutted me in the moment. That first chapter is so good.
@EveningReader

I just started reading Instructions for a Heatwave and I can see how you got sucked in. I bought Hamnet on a whim last year because of the cover. (Well, I'd also heard good things.) Don't want to jinx myself but I don't really care about my subscriber numbers. I mean, I wouldn't have started a channel if I didn't want people to watch, but mostly I care about having conversations like this one about books. And the events can be fun, but I was starting to feel obligated (from the inside). Tom Lake! Yes, that opening. And you are right about the slow reveal--the pacing is just perfect. But then, she admittedly loves plot and is a plotter! I'm going to listen to the audio.

“I didn’t read last week. I read one book.” Haha, still better than me. 😂 I was at the bookstore mulling over Claire Keegan & cheaped out: “I don’t want to pay that for a short story” I said (even though the hardback is beautiful).

I've enjoyed Patchett's essay collections. But have yet to read one of her novels. I must rectify that. Incidentally I've noticed that writers like Anita Shreve for instance, or Elizabeth Berg, don't get the same high praise from critics that Patchett does, even though they've engaged with similar themes and Patchett does that thing that you're not "supposed" to do in literary fiction - give your characters a happy ending. I suppose it will become crystal clear when I do finally read her.
@EveningReader
Жыл бұрын
Yes, her essay collections are wonderful, as is her book Truth & Beauty, about her friendship with the writer Lucy Grealy. I'd disagree, though, that Patchett gives her characters a happy ending. I'd say she gives them equilibrium or grace in a moment, but not necessarily happiness. I've not read Shreve or Berg, but I know what you mean. I think that about the writer J. Courtney Sullivan and her wonderful books Maine or Saints for All Occasions. I think it must be that blurry delineation between commercial and literary fiction--I think Patchett landed on one side because she found her longtime agent after having a story in The Paris Review, and writers like Shreve, Sullivan, and even Curtis Sittenfeld started off as commercial or women's fiction. And that's also funny because Patchett admittedly loves plot and plots all her books--not at all typical for lit fic!

I am encouraged by many booktubers to DNF a book that does not work for me. I do not DNF intentionally very often. Two reasons I continue... 1. Someone I admire or value their opinion loved the book 2. If I payed a lot for the book... I want to get my money's worth! The most memorable DNF was The Shack William P. Young. My mom loved it but it was just too poorly written (imo) and the religiosity is not for me. I hate read The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell by Robert Dugoni which I should have stopped reading when the over the top religiosity annoyed me. So many people loved it. Stop tempting me!! Tom Lake! What a beautiful cover. I am going to wait, I am going to wait...😜 Finished The Widows of Malabar Hill and liked it a lot. Will continue with the series. Thanks for the rec. Be well, continue to be true to yourself and the content will come naturally.

Marcia, I managed to avoid The Shack back in the day when my book club read it. Well, I say avoid--I just refused to read it! Poorly written religious propaganda isn't my thing. I've not heard of the Dugoni but now I definitely know to avoid that one, too! 😂 I'm so happy you enjoyed The Widows of Malabar Hill. And I hope Tom Lake is worth the wait for you!
