"and everyone hates the Jews" is such a perfect line and embodies the kind of guy Lehrer is (he's alive as of time of writing). He wrote this song in 1965, with racial tensions high, and the shock of the Holocaust still in fresh memory, and he proves that there is no 'too soon' in comedy. Because Lehrer wasn't insulting those that were suffering, he was satirising what was causing them. And that is what satire is, and should be. Modern 'satire' is just hatred hidden beneath a veneer of comedy. Satire is not hatred, it's taking the piss out of those in power, and the things that are going on.
@812558
6 ай бұрын
This. People nowadays think that, as long as their hatred has a punchline it's automatically fine because "It was a joke" and can never be criticized. If a guy from the 50's was making more nuanced satire about bigotry than you are in 2024, maybe you should try to get better at comedy first before telling everyone else that they're wrong for not liking it.

Sadly, the little boys are now grown men, which makes me feel very old, and my lovely husband, Michael, who became a close friend of Tom, died very recently - leaving me a lonely English widow. Still, I’m sure Tom misses Michael as much as I do. I also miss the beautiful sounds filtering up from our spare room where Tom had taken up residence and we could hear his wonderful piano playing throughout the house! What a joyful experience!

Lehrer did the same thing with the Pollution Song by coming up with LA/San Jose and Troy/Perth Amboy as possible replacements. The message still works.

One's intelligence is not necessarily dictated by one's interests, and vice versa. This version of MLP is much better than the drivel that came before it, and the writing is much better than many modern shows for adults. Evidence: Keeping Up With the Kardashians. These are like an answer to a prayer: To see Tom Lehrer performing in his prime. Thank you so much for posting these. But a question here: Is there audio only for the first 17 seconds of this, and that's why you put up the title? Because it would be much better to just see HIM, rather than an unnecessary title card. Sorry if I sound like an ingrate, I really am grateful to you for posting these. But I wish the titles didn't obscure the main attraction.

What a genius... I don't understand every single phrase (English is my secondary language as well) but it's quite amusing... Thoughtful, ironic... I really like it.

Well, strictly speaking, Tom Lehrer was a "Professor" rather than a "Lehrer", the difference between the two being that a "Professor" is a university professor and a "Lehrer" is an elementary-school or high-school teacher.

Tom Lehrer is SO amazing. And speaking as a Jewish person, the Jew line was the best in the song. I banged my head against the wall laughing. By the way, does anybody else think this is a great companion song to "Everyone's a Little Bit Racist" from Avenue Q?

I am glad that you share it. Besides, Norway is beautiful, if I may say so... been there decades ago and loved it.

Cakarlthy1996, thank you so much for watching Tom Lehrer. Your message should go to him, because he is the one who made the publishing of these twelve video rarities possible. If you know any Lehrer fans who are not aware of this exotic channel please give them a hint :-)

On another note. I LOVE Tom Lehrer. He makes such great points with his satire. If only we could all be as wise as him. Maybe we'd all finally be able to get along.

@makenna88 I have the "That Was The Year That Was" recording that he performed at The Hungry I and that line got a huge laugh there! Either the Norwegian audience didn't understand the words and the end applause was an act of politeness on their part or they didn't find it funny. Humor is the hardest thing to translate from one culture to another, especially social sensibilities.

@bellagia777 "It's American as Apple Pie" is just a common phrase from those times, meaning it's part of American culture. Racism still exists, sexism still exists (both are quite frequent still in the Southern folks), and there are still people who, even though claiming to be doing things in the name of "equality" are just as racist and sexist as any of the others who are open about. This song still rings true, if not in all the States.

@fadethetrade, no, as I said, they were Norwegian with a good grasp of English, but lacking the cultural references as well as comprehension. And maybe they were a bit shocked too?

Awesome ... interesting variation in the lyrics vs. the album version early on. "Cassius Clay and Mrs. Wallace" instead of "Lena Horne and Sheriff Clark".

As a Catholic, I really do NOT hate Protestants, but this song is so funny. Sadly, the part about the Jews is so sad, p.t...😢🤦♂️

@ilovecakexD, yes it is (or was). But Tom Lehrer made the best out of it, and there is, in fact, some laughter. The crowd was not miked, so it´s difficult to hear it all. But, no they didn´t get the whole picture, no.
