I've destroyed two SM57s over the decades on the road and still use one on my snare. I bought the Sennheiser e604 mics for my toms as I thought they were better focused with fewer overtones. The mounting of the 604s cut down on expense of extra mounts and stands and are low profile and this was a consideration when buying. Thanks for posting this! The Samsons actually tested better than I would have predicted, but I'm not a fan.

Went to a studio where they used 421's on my toms. I asked the engineer if he'd like to play a bit, he agreed. I whipped out my D6's and we threw them on the floors and they blew the 421's away. No EQ needed. In a side by side, they sounded like the 421's that had had the crap eq'd out of them. The engineer was blown away and couldn't believe how easy the D6's were to use. Changed his mind about a $400 mic over a $200 mic. Changed his mind about Audix as well. 40+ years of experience I can say this, any mic out there will achieve what you want given you have the ear, time, and patience to work with it. Some tools make it easier than others however. And we all know about opinions and how everyone has their own. What I try to offer is a view based on real world experience using all these mics. I am interested in trying the Telefunken's someone mentioned above. I had a full set of Audix D series and they worked great. I am considering a set of either Sennheiser or Telefunken for my next go around. Currently the sound man for the band I gig with uses the $199 set of CAD mics. I don't mind telling you, it's more about the guy twisting the knobs than anything else. My drums sound like God's thunder... unbelievable. However he does place a B52 on the kicks and uses the CAD kick mic on the floor. You'd have to hear it to believe it but I was just as shocked as anyone. Have fun.

I already did a newer, better video with a lot more microphones on my toms, sadly no Audix D series, because I didn't own other Audix microphones besides my D6 in my kick. I don't like the sound of the 421s, too. They are very big, so thats another disadvantage when you want to position them.

Scott, I remember back in the day, if you didn't have loads of cash, you mic'd an entire drum kit/ band, with SM57's. If the sound guy had a clue, everything sounded great! Take a look at the Audix i5. A lot more robust than the SM57 and a little warmer sound with a bit more definition. All in all a nice improvement. I know a sound guy here who uses them on toms and they sound damn good. However I still like a kick mic on floor toms. :)

I've used SM57 and Samson Q Tom microphones. I've found the Samson mics to be a tremendous value. They aren't very expensive compared to some of the competition and they sound great on my toms (Pearl ELX shells with Evans G Plus heads). I mostly use the SM57 for the snare drum as I find it conveys a nice mixture of snap and body for my 12"x6" birch snare.

Thanks fort the comparison.. I always thought there was very little difference between most standard dynamic mics and this really shows it.. yes there are subtle differences for sure.. but nothing too major. We have the 604s at work and I have always liked their sound. I tend to use my 57s for recording - and have just picked up some Q Toms for gigs.. when pointing at the centre they really sound so similar on this video so I'm sure I will be happy with them.

I feel like the SM57 brings out more of the attack whereas the e604 gives a more flat response. The QTom is ok I guess, but doesn't stack up to the 57 and e604. Very nice comparision! I bought the 3 pack of e604s. I was already using the SM 57's drum kit mics, but they just seem to lack the depth I wanted using them live. The e604s seem more evenly balanced, and since I'm in a live situation, I want more of the depth of the tom and not so much of the attack, as the space I work in is pretty live already. The Samson Q didn't sound terrible, it seemed to have a tone that would be more useful for a dark moody tone of music. I could see the Samson's working for some of the bands we book at my venue. I might pick one up since they are so cheap and give it a try.

Thanks for the vid. It is always good to give a fair comparison for guys looking to buy their own mics. Alot of gurus tend to make em feel if they don't spend a fortune they got crap. The samson for me would not cut it. The 57 is industry standard and cheap at 100$. But for close micing with not alot of room, senny is idea, alot of attack and compact. Not much diff in sound to the 57 but only here, until you are actually throwing down. Sennheiser, a name you can trust. Get good cables, quick.
@BillBrolse

To me there are huge differences. The 57 is much more focused and controlled. Resonant frequencies are less prominent. The balance of attack, low end and openness is superior. There is more meat in the punch. I own the 604e´s myself. Was the eq and compression tailored to suit the 57? The Samson is just a mess.

I love the SM57 as much as anybody. Sounds great and throw it off a 15 foot drop and it still works(I've done it😂) but just recently I was convinced to buy some 604's and I'm real glad I did! Not only do they sound great, but super easy to setup, and stay out of the way! In my opinion that Qtom shouldn't even be a tom mic. Maybe a good fit for Bass amp? I dunno I don't think it sounds good at all.

FYI..I use both Senn and sm 57's.. with no EQ 57's are rolled off at 200 hz and boosted at 1k.. The Sennheiser e604 can get the same sound when you roll off 200 and below and boost 1k.. Now depending on the cabinets the sound is coming from determines how much cut and boost. seen rumble bc of the drum mount.

No meat to the 57 to my ears. The 604 seems to isolate the sound of the drum better than the 57 can. I use a 57 on a floor tom because that's all I have at the moment and I get alot of the rest of the kit rather than just the tom itself.

The recordings sounded best (in my opinion) without EQ and compression. Perhaps it's the case for toms that is... But the you gotta consider overheads picking that up, and how EQ and compression play a role in that. With that being said, perhaps the right equipment will ensure not the need to mix and edit sound.

The e604 was my overall favorite, with punch but also low end. The SM57 (or ostensibly SM58) was my second pick, just barely, with a little less low end but a great open top end and natural sound. The Samson mic does not even rate for me. Just a wash on that, no character to speak of.
