I would have never known Tom Petty covered this if I hadn't read Will Birch's book "Cruel To Be Kind" the Nick Lowe biography. Good cover. Thanks for posting Jeff W. Cheers!

Gotta read that one! Me, I just found about this cover when I was reading Lowe's Wikipedia page, and, by mistake, clicked the "pages that link to this" link - which gave me a list where I saw "Tom Petty".

I don't understand why people think someone covers a song because they think they can do it better. Whether it's a tribute or just having some fun, which every artist loves to do, who gives af? Listen and enjoy, or move on!

Tom did a lot of really cool songs that didn't end up on albums and didn't get much exposure. This one, of course, but also "Keepin' Me Alive," which should have and could have been a hit, but because of the producer Jimmy Iovine, didn't end up on Long After Dark. There's a lot of great songs on Playback that aren't available elsewhere. Thanks for posting this song. It popped into my head a few minutes back, and I was pleasantly surprised to find it here.

I can see why Tom would cover this song. Great songwriting which a master like Tom would love. God we miss him

@GPhoenixMan This song was originally by Nick Lowe. Both versions are great. I am going to see him in July. He always puts on a great show.

I used to hear this on FM radio, KMET and KLOS, in 1980, in Los Angeles. As I remember, it was a "B Side" to his live version of Eric Burdon's "Don't Bring Me Down". This is outstanding. THanks for posting.

@GPhoenixMan some other songs that come to mind are "Trailer" for Southern Accents, or "Casa Dega" and "Ways to Be Wicked" etc.

You're correct -- and "Don't Bring Me Down" wasn't released until '86, on the "Pack Up the Plantation" album. This was actually the B-side to "Make it Better."

@ted33ina3rd You're going to see Tom Petty or Nick Lowe? I saw TP and the Heartbreakers during the tour for Into the Great Wide Open and the one for Wildflowers. Two of the greatest concerts I ever went to.

I THINK that you may have been hearing the Nick Lowe version, as I don't believe Tom Petty recorded this cover until 1985? I may be wrong!

Much as I love TP&tHs I think they should resist the temptation to cover their favourite songs when the original just can't be improved on.

Not a fan of this version. Apart from Petty's snarly, garbled vocal and grungy sound, he adds nothing to this tune.
