1980s and 1990s EPCOT is undoubtedly peak EPCOT. But what we have now is absolutely superior to what we’ve had for the last 15 or 20 years imo. It’s not the park many of us fell in love with as kids, but it feels hopeful and optimistic in a new way. Honestly I’m more excited for this year’s trip than I have been in a while.

I think you hit it on the nail, Tom. Luminous is nothing new or ground-breaking, but it's sincere with great original songs, a high-quality score, and leaves you feeling something. It is much more in line with a classic Epcot show, and focuses on what we have in common, whereas Harmonious made a point of showcasing our differences without ultimately tying them all together. Looking forward to seeing this show in person.

I think it's fairly obvious what World Celebration is for: Epcot Festivals. They called the hub "Festival Area" after canceling the Festival Pavilion. Festivals are almost year-round now and Disney is making bank off them, so of course they are going to be a major focus of any "reimagining". That's why the hub has gardens and tables and not fountains or anything interesting to regular parkgoers. After seeing Communicore Plaza pointing directly at the Imagination pavilion - and the triangles on the Communicore building being an obvious link to Imagination - it appears to me like that pavilion is going to be a big part of this new Celebration nonsense. So I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Figment will soon move out to find a new home - probably the Play pavilion/Wonders of Life, because there's no way they're going to try to fix Imagination again - so his current home can turn into another Festival building. With new attractions in World Showcase and rumors of others on the way, it seems like Epcot really wants to keep the parkgoers and the Festivalgoers in their own areas. That is actually a great idea as this should keep the Festival people - aka locals - away from World Showcase in the later hours when most park guests are there, which will really help with traffic flow. But it's a fairly dreadful idea for a theme park. Festival areas are usually on the outer edges of parks. There's a reason for that. They've tried to ameliorate this a bit by having Communicore Plaza face away from the hub, but it's still going to feel like a whole lot of boring to the thousands of people who pass through here every day who have no interest in buying expensive food and drinks. Why does Chapek get name-checked for every bad decision Disney made while he worked there but nobody else ever does? If you're going to blame him for things when he was head of the parks, then call out his boss as well. Iger held the purse strings, and there are MANY stories about his complete and total lack of understanding of what makes the parks work. (One example: He wanted to make Avatar part of the Backlot Tour. Tom Staggs is the reason Pandora is an actual land with actual rides.) His anti-creativity is the reason many board members didn't want him as CEO (and why Disney's film output is mostly sequels and remakes - and the MCU is ALL sequels). Chapek may be an epic jerk, but he was the one who oversaw one of two completely successful lands that appeared during Iger's reign. Other than Cars Land, every land built since 2005 has the stench of budget cuts. This is important because both of these lands involved working with actual creatives - Chapek had to work with James Cameron and Tom Staggs had to work with John Lasseter and his baby. Both these guys played the Roy Disney role in the creation of these lands. You know damn well Iger had zero input in both these lands. On the other end of the spectrum, when Iger started demanding budget cuts to the Epcot "reimagining", Chapek actually cut the correct things. (Admit it, you totally know Iger would've kept the Mary Poppins teacups and dumped Ratatouille.) Attraction totals at most of the Disney parks are at or near the totals when Iger took control in 2005, yet prices are nowhere near what they were then. So that's either his fault, or it's Bob Chapek's... AND Jay Rasulo's... AND Tom Staggs'... AND Josh D'Amaro's. That's a lot of people who all have remarkably similar ideas about not expanding these parks.

World Celebration definitely could've used a fountain and some kinetic sculptures of some sort to help during the day. The lighting at night is amazing! (and would be even more so with a fountain to light up 😉) I'm not sure if anything will top Illiuminations but Luminous seems good enough for now. There were a couple of song choices that weren't to my personal musical taste, though they did fit the message of the show. I haven't seen it in person yet so we'll see how my opinion shifts once I get out there.

I think Tom is right about UO not being a "pretty park" but we all have been going there for years to experience the great attractions within it. Having said that, they upped their game when they built the WWOHP there and I think we were all pretty impressed (I haven't even seen the HP movies and I said they upped Disney the first time I visited that world). I think Tom would agree that UO built a couple of theme parks in a relatively small piece of real estate, quickly, to try to capitalize on the success of WDW and the massive visitors to Orlando and sacrificed some beauty in the process. Let's wait and see if the new Epic property will be their "next level step". End of day, I want them BOTH to be beacons of success as part of the American dream and America's ingenuity to bring world class entertainment to Florida.

Cool review but I got to disagree on the multilanguage part. I know its an american park made for Americans people but it was, for me, a wonderful way to open the gates to new sounds and to honor World showcase. As a guest that felt left out as a kid due to my lack of English knowledge, these parts made me particularly emotional. As for the IP point, I get its over done, I'm too young to remember the Old Epcot, but this felt right. The perfect balance between BAM disney songs in your face and how do they sound around the world. As so, it wasn't a bland sing-along but a demonstration of diversity and beauty. At worst, it's out of your confort zone but for particular guest, its magical. When I heard Quasimodo sing in French, I was busting with excitement❤. The young me would have loved it (to finally understand a bit of something😂)! So yeah, really disappointed to see its not coming back. But in the end, the soundtracks was the best part of that show and as it is sound, its never going out of my music mix!

I think it definitely has room to grow and can be tweaked to be better but it feels like Epcot. It has a story, it has a great theme, and it is viewable from anywhere in the park. Hopefully they take the time to use this technology and expand upon it over the next few years so that the next iteration of the nighttime show at Epcot will truly bring us back to incredible.

Bravo! Luminous is a true EPCOT show - full of heart, and a storyline that we need to hear (and act on) in today's turbulent world. As a die-hard Illuminations: RoE fan, I was deeply sceptical before seeing this, but the excellent scoring of the IP illuminated the deep-seated truths in great Disney songs and made them sound even more beautiful, rather than shoehorning in "as heard in the movie" snippets. And Tom, while I agree with 99.99% of your comments, I applaud the inclusion of other languages - it's always good to be reminded that different people express the same idea using different words!

I am quite excited about Luminous and as everyone has said at this point it is not illuminations but I feel like these new barges are incredibly useful and open up a possibility for new shows keeping some of the same infrastructure. They could add fire to this show or a future show. They could add new barges or a new center barge like illuminations. This feels like the right direction for epcot and gives a huge opening for future potential. Also the show is very good and the original music is going to bounce in my head for the next week.

I really liked it and was sad not to get a second viewing, but Harmonious was there my 2 other trips. I did get emotional for Harmonious so it did do something. I did really like it. Maybe I had a good viewing area for it both times? Idk. I watched your video on this show. I had a harder time hearing the words which made it harder to get it. I'm not sure which Toy Story song you speak of but they do fit in the storyline. "You've Got a Friend in Me" is toward the beginning after essentially your birth, bonding with parents, bonding with family and making family traditions. "You've Got a Friend in Me" starts of the segment where we move away and start making friends outside of our family circle. That then evolves into finding your significant other and falling in love. That then evolves into having our hearts broken through loss. However the loss occurs. That's where "When She Loved Me" comes in. Not saying if I like it or not but how it fits into the storyline of it all. 🙂

I'm with you here really... but the only difference we share in view is that Luminus is better than "it's just ok"... It think they hit the nail on the head for a MUCH better show than Harmonious. Yes, it doesn't live up to RoE, but then again what can? I think the era of Disney going all out and spending HUGE RnD money on a nighttime spectacular are over. I think it's just going to be going back to the box and pulling out what works. So, with that in mind, and a MUCH smaller budget, this is an awesome show to get... it could have been a LOT worse, right? But even without that said, as you said it hits the emotions. To me, though the biggest thing is that throughout the piece, it pulls from the past. I hear moments and see moments that pull from previous shows throughout. They brought in the lights around the edges of the buildings around world showcase, they brought back the "laser light show" from Illuminations (org/25), the torches from RoE... the music from various shows is hinted at here and there if not straight up brought directly in for a few notes... Yes, there's the Disney IP music, but in all honesty at times I didn't even recognize it when first watching through that it was songs from other Disney/Pixar IP... felt original... but then you do see it on subsequent viewings right. So yea, it's a bit of harmonious again musically, but you know what? It's still a great show. It's not the heights of awe inspiring awesomeness from I:RoE, but how does Disney get there again with the current C-suite? I just don't see that happening, it's going to take HUGE shakeups at Disney for that to happen, and yea right that that's ever going to happen, right? So for now, yea this is a nice night cap. The kiss goodnight we've been waiting on after I:RoE was taken from us... which btw I think they reference the loss of the great shows in the loss segment... after all, we all did fall in love with those shows right? And then we lost them... but yea, great night cap and kiss goodnight from Epcot and a great way to end the day/night.

I think Harmonious was alot better. It was epic, impressive, high energy and powerful. Each song would represent a country or region, and I loved hearing them sang in the native language, and featuring traditional instruments and singing techniques. The pacing was spot on and had a good mix of slow moments with songs How Far I'll Go/Go The Distance, Reflection, Out There and high energy moments with Wanna Be Like You, Touch The Sky, El Mundo Es Mi Familia, Dig A Little Deeper. The Lion King segment arrangement was new and refreshing. The Someday closing segment was a standout. Those cannon fireworks firing one after the other, then the black out of the lights part, then the big bright finale never ceased to amaze me and give me chills. I left Epcot every night in awe and pumped with energy! DON'T GET ME WRONG I HATED THE BARGES. And it wasn't traditional Epcot, but it is inevitable now that IP will be included in all aspects of Disney going forward. But Harmonious was too good of a nighttime spectacular to be gotten rid of. I wish Disney had just removed the barges, but kept and adapted Harmonious

Harmonious was fine but I think the downsides of losing the view across the lagoon outweighed its positives so while Luminous has some some pacing issues that I think could be fixed by book-ending the dialogue and letting the music flow uninterrupted, I think it's an improvement and there are some moments in the musical arrangements I found genuinely stunning. Layering "When She Loved Me" and "Remember Me" and then following it up with Elsa's calling out from "Into the Unknown" - it's very effective and when interwoven with that Epcot theme the emotion is balanced with inspiration. And I really like the intro shooting stars matching the languages of the countries around the lagoon as well, even if it is a returning feature.

By day, from appearances through a computer monitor, World Celebration Gardens does appear a bit "flat" by day. I'm thinking that once CommuniCore Hall and the entertainment venue are completed, it will add some depth to the area, thereby livening up the whole central spine. By night though, it really takes on a whole new personality. The lack of any water feature is a huge "miss". Even small water jets, like those in the garden areas of the World of Color viewing area at DCA (are they still there?), would be enough to add some visual kinetics. As for Luminous, personally I find it a better fit for World Showcase than Harmonius (which I personally didn't like at all). It's got some really beautiful moments in it, and I found my heart strings tugged during the show. While I wish there wasn't narration in the show, I think a majority of the guests visiting Disney parks may not "get" the symbolism of the production without it, (I had many friends who didn't understand the whole Reflections of Earth story) so I'll leave that there. I pretty much find myself in agreement with Tom's assessment of the production. Looking forward to seeing this whole project in its nearly completed state in just 49 days. Thanks for your honest review, Tom C!

I may be wrong, but I seem to recall it having something to do with the "no fly" zones over Disneyland and Walt Disney World. I believe that as long as Disney wants the skies above them to be aircraft free (under a certain altitude), they too, have to follow the same rules.

16:15 For what it’s worth, that area looked like an 80’s/90’s park, so this updates it to modern aesthetics. I don’t know of many college or public parks that have futuristic lighting that illuminates to the music and other elements in the park. They certainly didn’t do that in the OG EPCOT. And, while they were at it, they made it useful as well as there’s never really been places to sit and relax. Now I’d like them to carry the same utility to the rest of EPCOT so we don’t have to eat on top of trash cans.

I adored your analysis of HEA, but I do feel as though you’ve missed so many details here. For me, this show is spectacular! The attention to detail, and the respect that the creators have shown towards Epcots legacy makes this extra special. For those interested, here’s some details missed: Walt saying the last welcome gives me chills. The moment the individual voices go from discord to harmony was a a gorgeous narrative gesture right before the main them begins. The constant thread of Epcots new gorgeous Toprak theme was a genius way to keep the flow of the whole symphonic piece. Yes I’d prefer this to be completely original, but I think we have to accept the IPs are here to stay, but at least they are producing some beautiful mash ups. The interweaving of IPs was beautifully done, I don’t want to hear people singing along, I want Disney to take me on an emotional journey and this does that at every section. The fact that we get two original songs makes this extra special! Both our classic Disney at their best. I’ve only mentioned the music so far, as for the pyros, this is the most spectacular use of pyros I have ever seen, they’re incredible! I can almost guarantee that this will be one of the most successful shows at any Disney park. The hate that Harmonious received when it first opened was astonishing m yet folk’s suddenly feel nostalgic when they’re gone! I’m just grateful that we have creative minds who clearly understand the legacy of parks such as Epcot.

The Lagoon is so large and not fully used. They should add some floats or jet sky. The island also gets in the way they should just remove it.

I’ve seen videos and pictures of world celebration and I agree that it just looks like a regular public park that you see everywhere and also I really wish they would’ve built that festival pavilion like they planned to build, with the rooftop garden and the indoor middle section, that building had a unique style and I just wish they built that instead of just a glorified public park

I'll need to experience it live - but this looks/seems like a good show that is loveable. Thanks for the very genuine review; love your work.

Love Luminous especially the start reminded me of the very first Illuminations I saw in 1997 when every country welcomed you to the show. But apart from Reflections of Earth which was special - I really liked Epcot Forever and was quite pleased when it returned.

I love these reviews! Thank you, Tom. Honestly, knowing that I wouldn't get Illuminations back, I'm happy with what they gave me in Luminous, 🤷. There's a firework that makes the Epcot symbol, I thought that was dope. Although, I will always say that there is room for "Uncle Walt's" voice in a nighttime show track, lol. I will miss that part about Epcot Forever. I also like that the middle part doesn't drag the way the globe part of Illuminations did. It spun for way too long before something happened, lol. I hated Harmoneous and won't miss it.

Tom, you had mentioned how the gardens look bland, like so many college campuses. Dreary colors: black, light tan, and rust. You said it had little theming. I posit that this is Disney's projection of what the future will look like: dreary, uninspired, lifeless, no movement. Maybe Disney knows something we don't. Maybe the future will be bleak. I'll just see my way out... ...to Animal Kingdom.

Agree with ALMOST everything you said. I love the original new music, but the singing feels too "current" and will not age well as things change. If it was all orchestral, possibly, but the lyrics along with the modern melody, I dont see this relating for the long term. One of the lasting hallmarks of IllumiNations was that the music carried the feel and helped the viewer imagine and create their own attachment. The lyrcis in Luminous lead the emotion the viewer should be experiencing. I definitely want to see it live, but I dont think this will pull me away from rides or other attractions to watch visit after visit. I do think that the barge setup can be reconfigured much more easily if they need or want to update to something new without a major overhaul.

The new area felt like a funeral. I thought that Walt’s bench was just a tribute to Jack Kirby. Walt’s statue is just a place for selfie fanatics to crawl all over him and enact their TikTok challenges. Moana should have been a dark ride, I’m sure Bob Paycheck only tore down Communicore in an effort to save on air conditioning bills to boost Disney stock prices?

I miss when EPCOT was future themed and educational with corporate sponsoring and showcasing new tech. The other side was for sampling different countries and cultures. Now even that is being changed for IP. Nothing to inspire learning. The land and Living seas is about all that's left. Disney has long lost it's rudder on this one. BTW, How did you get that view of the fireworks without somebody's shoulder-surfing kid in the way?

Harmonious was such a beautiful show. It had so much emotion into it. Luminous is a fountain dance.. beautiful, don't get me wrong, but lacks emotion to me.

I believe drone barges during the show, in close proximit to worlds showcase, with small fountains, lights or fire would be a game changer. To make the guest feel the action closer. I hope an imagineer reads this.
