Kinda has that smooth Alannah Myles Black Velvet flavor. Sounds amazing. Only thing. Ya'll two don't look like you have ever run into Fallen James, Slaughter House Joe, or any Gun Streeet Girls. You both look like you make every effort to never swear on Sundays.

Falling James in the Tahoe mud Stick around to tell us all the tale Well, he fell in love with a Gun Street girl And now he's dancing in the Birmingham jail Dancing in the Birmingham jail Took a 100 dollars off a Slaughterhouse Joe Bought a brand new Michigan 20 gauge Got all liquored up on that roadhouse corn Blew a hole in the hood of a yellow Corvette A hole in the hood of a yellow Corvette Bought a secondhand Nova from a Cuban Chinese Dyed his hair in the bathroom of a Texaco With a pawnshop radio, quarter past 4 He left Waukegan at the slammin' of the door He left Waukegan at the slammin' of the door I said, John, John he's long gone Gone to Indiana Ain't never coming home I said John, John he's long gone Gone to Indiana Ain't never coming home Sitting in a sycamore in St. John's Wood Soakin' day-old bread in kerosene He was blue as a robin's egg and brown as a hog Stayin' out of circulation till the dogs get tired Out of circulation till the dogs get tired Shadow fixed the toilet with an old trombone He never got up in the morning on a Saturday Sittin' by the Erie with a bull-whipped dog Tellin' everyone he saw they went thatta way Tellin' everyone he saw they went thatta way Now the rain's like gravel on an old tin roof And the Burlington Northern's pullin' out of the world Now a head full of bourbon and a dream in the straw And a Gun Street girl was the cause of it all A Gun Street girl was the cause of it all Riding in the shadow by the St. Joe Ridge He heard the click clack tappin' of a blind man's cane He was pullin' into Baker on a New Year's Eve With one eye on the pistol and the other on the door One eye on the pistol and the other on the door Miss Charlotte took her satchel down to King Fish Row And she smuggled in a brand new pair of alligator shoes With her fireman's raincoat and her long yellow hair Well, they tied her to a tree with a skinny millionaire Tied her to a tree with a skinny millionaire I said, John, John he's long gone Gone to Indiana Ain't never coming home I said John, John he's long gone Gone to Indiana Ain't never coming home Bangin' on a table with an old tin cup Sing I'll never kiss a Gun Street girl again I'll never kiss a Gun Street girl again I'll never kiss a Gun Street girl again I said, John, John he's long gone Gone to Indiana Ain't never coming home I said John, John he's long gone Gone to Indiana Ain't never coming home

With all due respect, I must beg to differ, at least in regards to whether this interpretation is better than the original. Now, don't get me wrong. It is good enough to have made me consider whether you might be right. So, not having heard it for a long time, I went back to listen to the original to compare them myself. Now, this is a fine cover version. It has integrity and stands on its own, you don't need to have heard the original to appreciate it. She has a rich alto/mezzo voice and she tells the tale well with her country blues delivery of the lyrics. His guitar picking is resonant and at the same time restrained. It's . . . great. Their tempo is tight. And their vocal harmonies when he joins in are well fitted and subtle. But, at the risk of sounding literary and pretentious, the difference between listening to this cover version and Wait's original is like that between listening to a well done memorized recitation of a written down (and translated) version of The Iliad, while you are seated somewhere indoors probably, at a place with a decent menu and table service, and that of being actually present around the campfire where Homer holds his audience in thrall with just the words coming out of his mouth. When Waits sings this he's the guy telling the story for the first time ever to a bunch of fellow ne'r do wells huddled around a fire on a blustery night somewhere on the woody fringes of an industrial urban wasteland. And you are there with them and we've entered, Rime of the Ancient Mariner style, into the realm of mythos. And it may just not be possible to beat that.

@@petersmall1574 thanks. Simply put, we love this song and the original interpretation/performance. So much of the arrangement and production of the original helps to further the story being told. We thought it would be fun to do our own take, since we love the tune.
@petersmall1574

@@ataleoftwomusic Oh, yeah. And your love and understanding of the song comes through in your performance. You've gotten inside of it and made it your own. But most important, you're helping get its message out to a new audience. As I'm sure we can all agree, perhaps the most underappreciated aspect of Tom Waits' songs is the amount of sage wisdom tucked into so many of his lyrics. And, as hard earned life lessons go, the admonition to be especially wary of those Gun Street girls ranks right up there with such gems as "Never trust a man in a blue trench coat/Never drive a car when you're dead." It's similar to the way Johnny Cash in so many of his songs was trying to convey to hotheaded young men simple, lifesaving messages such as listen to your mother and exercise caution around firearms. ;)
@ShortcutKeysNet

I don't think we should even compare, it's just different as 'neutralest' way possible. It doesn't need to be better, it just needs to tell the story for some ears to appreciate.
