Actually, Tom used to scream in a pillow when he was young in order to get an "older" voice. Not that smoking and whiskey won't affect your voice, but it's probably a combination of the polyps he developed screaming, relentless touring when younger and, yes, it's part of his act.

a channel 4 tv show "Loose Talk" from 1983. The host and audience were treating Tom Waits disrespectfull imo. The were laughing at him thinking he was strange. Then he gave them pure beauty with these 2 songs. Teh interview used to be on youtube, but I can't find it anymore.

I've been working for years now to get this voice, It's harder then it looks. It's easy to shout it, but to sing it with such fines is what give it it's extra touch. So, i'm out to drink more johnny's.

Original recording is on the One From The Heart soundtrack, 1982 ^_^ I heard it on the radio one day and bought it just for this song. The rest is ok. I don't really like Crystal Gale very much so that sort of wrecks it for me, but love that Tom.

The whole 'i beg your pardon/new orleans' songs was recorded from a show in England called "Loose Talk" in which both the crowd and interviewer prodded at Tom...picking fun. Then he got up there and played...it was just beautiful. I hate arrogance.

While being well written, I do not agree with the use of "faking" in your comment; it implies that he puts people under the pretense of that being his "real" voice. He uses his signature growl because he thinks it fits well with his type of music. Also, he openly stopped smoking in 1980, well before his vocals reached their gritty peak.

I wish someone didn't remove the interview part of the show, 'Loose Talk'. Man those people were half-wits. The host had no clue and the audience just shouted out stupid shit like,"He sucks!".

Actually Tom admitted to deliberately straining his voice to get that raspy sound. Naturally, lifestyle has punctuated the affect.

Lol, you say he got that voice on purpose? Did he say that in an interview? You can't believe anything he says in an interview! He once said, of his "talking voice", that he only talks like that "on the weekends"! Hahaha. And you think his mother was a tree? I know it wasn't accidental, I know he does it on purpose. But I don't think that he had to go to an extra effort beyond either lifestyle or just having amazing control over his voice and tone. Imo.
