love his music but had always thought he would be a grouchy 'artiste' - but watching some of these clips, he has such a sharp surreal sense of humour, not scared of sending himself up and all the funnier for the deadpan delivery

I always figured he'd be a grumpy guy but was pleasantly surprised to find he's quite the opposite of that. He's wickedly funny in an unexpected way. A cool eccentric person.

I was born in 88, and raised on Tom Waits. Swordfish Trombones was one of the first CDs I ever owned, and I own a vinyl first pressing of Rain Dogs, which is not a cheap album to own. I have been aware of the man's sheer brilliance as a true artist, showman, comedian, and wonderful human being, since before I can remember. Tom Waits is my spirit animal... Tom Waits, hallowed be thy name...

Boy, his voice is about shot. The whiskey-and-cigarettes gravel thing was always forced with him anyway, and now he's got no lower register at all. Soon he'll be in Jack Klugman territory. Great artist, though.

I saw David Lynch bring a mouse trap he built on a talk show once but I do like antiques so it's hard to pick a favourite. I think Dave responded to Toms trap better than the other host did to Davids and that's unfortunate since he did build it himself.
