Funny how one's tastes in music changes over time. In the early 1970s, when I first heard Tom Waits' music, I hated it. I bought one album at the time. Then in mid 1990s, I gave it a listening to, once again. At that time, I kind of fell in love with it. I have become a huge fan of his music, ever since. I began collecting his CDs. Thanks to You Tube, I can listen to all his recordings. Not a single day goes by where I don't have a place for one of his songs. His words, the lyrics of his tunes are amazing. I'm old enough to remember some the "old time" phrases, he incorporates that are referential to the 1920s, 1930s, 40s, & 50s. Street language of their day. Rough, crude, laced with double meanings. I think he is America's national treasure. He and I are fairly close in age,....within a couple of years. I am also amazed at how prolific he is, having produced so many albums/ CDs.

Same here. I was 12 in 1992. Bone Machine was the worst thing I ever heard. But 30 years later he is one of my all time favorite American musicians. And plays with some of the best living talent. Who else would hire Keith Richards to sing backup? Hahhah Found this track looking for songs with a Cümbüs played.

Best thing about this, not a lot of public comment. Tom Waits is far, far too good for public consumption. Folks couldn’t handle it. Go Tom, Go!

Among the all-time greats of singular unique quality and incredibly refined poetry of lyrics... His voice, the unusual arrangements with a sweet and sour tang using some articles that, by anyone else, would never even be considered as any form of instrument, yet, without these attributes we would not have the immense wealth of his incredible artistic creative genius with us in this current day and age.. As a fellow poet/musician one could never overstate his value as the creator of an entirely different blend of music, old-time circus showmanship and novelty store grandeur full of one fascinating jewel after another.. Thank you, to the one, the only great...Mr. Tom Waits..

May 2022,.....I survived the Pandemic, & so far, so good. During the height of it, 2020 through the end of 2021, with much of the world closed down, I busied myself by listening to every one of Tom Waits albums, on You Tube. I already owned a few CDs, like the one this tune is from: Mule Variations which came out in 1999. The whole album is excellent. Most of the album is upbeat and entertaining, filled with strange tales & interesting stories, but there are 3 tunes, that bring me to tears. And I have trouble listening to them,...and that's just my opinion.
