The recording presented here is an instrumental version, which is intended to bring the listeners only slightly closer to the sound of music performed in the Wawel Cathedral. The original is composed for a male a capella ensemble.
Tomasz Szadek studied at the University of Krakow from 1560. From 1572 he was a musician in the band of King Zygmunt August of the Jagiellonian dynasty, and from 1575, after being ordained a priest, he became a member of the Rorantists' Chapel in the Wawel Cathedral. He sang there for 3 years. After that, he held the functions of vicar of the Wawel Cathedral and parish priest of the church in the village of Rudawa, to return to church and administrative positions at Wawel. He was a priest authorized to absolve the gravest sins (a penitentiary) and an inspector of vicars' houses. He lived in Krakow until the end of his life, enjoying the favor of his surroundings, despite the moral scandals in which he was involved. He died around 1611. Three of his compositions have survived: the Mass Pis ne me, the Mass Dies est laetitiae and the motet Vultum tuum.
