I was a bit worried I planted my Brandywines too late but we have long summers and after feeding them with some compost tea and a layer of earthworm compost plus some straw mulch, they are just growing tremendously. I will definitely try collect some seeds from them once they fruit. As a total rookie veggie gardener, I got some seedlings from a nursery after multiple heatwaves killed all my baby plants, but one tray lost its label so I was trying to guess what it was until today, I spotted the most gorgeous green pepper hanging from the one plant and saw many more in different sizes on the other plants!! I actually thought it was a herb but could not identify the smell, so now I know lol. So happy days and included my first pepper in the stirfry tonight

One thing for everyone to keep in mind when taking tomato cuttings is to be very mindful of if you are taking a cutting from a DETERMINATE plant or from an INDETERMINATE plant. If you take a cutting from a DETERMINATE "mother plant" that has already pushed out blossoms the clone will "KNOW" where it is in its life cycle and will assume that it has already pushed out blossoms and will not grow and produce fruits. IF YOU WANT TO CLONE A DETERMINATE plant you MUST take the clone off of the plant BEFORE the first blossoms appear. INDETERMINATE plants can be cloned at any time as long as the shoot you are cloning has not pushed out any blossoms.

Hey Jess! I really appreciate what ya do and all your effort....just wanted to share another tip on how one old timer that I knew used to extend her tomato season.....she would pick every blemish free green tomato at the end of the season and wrapped them individually in newspaper and stacked them in a bushel basket and kept them in a dark closet in the house.. there they kept really well, and slowly ripened, and we still ate fresh sliced garden tomatoes at thanksgiving and after... worked like a charm😊. Worth a try? Thanks for sharing

I've been planting suckers using that exact method for years and it works perfectly. I'm days away from picking from the first set of suckers and today I'm cutting more. Free tomatoes! Yay! I live in southeast Georgia and whew! The heat and humidity is no joke so I feel ya lol. Our central Ac went out the summer of 2016. It finally bit the dust after years of problems and sucking us dry. Turned into a money pit. Since then we've been using window units and surprisingly our electric bill has decreased and our house stays so much cooler. Needless to say I'm in no hurry to replace the central Ac.

Jawjagrrl I'm about 30 minutes outside of Statesboro. This heat and humidity are awful ALL the time lol. Sometimes even into December. My tomatoes are looking good and still setting blooms and fruit which is a first for me this late in the season. My corn and cucumbers on the other hand are shot! Too much heat and not enough rain got them :( What kind of pickles did you make? I have terrible luck when it comes to pickles and them turning out mushy.

I have done suckers many times before and had great success. Here's a couple of florist tips that will help you. When we clean our flowers as they come in we make sure after the cut it is in water in 4 seconds. If not it forms a air bubble in the stem and won't be able to uptake water. We also cut all stems at a 45 degree angle (more space to drink) Also make sure no leaves or stems are below the water line this just leads to rotting. Good luck. This is how I grow my second wave of tomatoes every year!

If you do make a hoop greenhouse over one of your raised beds, then you can lay a plant frost protector blanket over the plants inside. With the plastic over the hoops, you move that raised bed to 1 USDA grow zone higher than yours. With the addition of the lightweight frost protector blanket over the plants in the raised bed, you move the plants to a still higher USDA grow zone. I'm in Zone 5. With addition of a portable greenhouse or plastic over hoops over the raised bed plus an Agribon Frost protector fabric over the plants inside the greenhouse/ hoops with plastic over, I now have the plants living in Zone 7. Of course with 2 layers of protection, I have reduced the amount of sunshine the plants receive, but they will grow ( slowly).

Def do the hoop green house. I made mine so I could raise chickens in it . I gain a month on each end of the growing season. When season is over I put the chickens in it for the winter . They eat any bugs, turn and fertilize the soil . I take them out a few months before I need to grow . I rotor till the soil so their manure is not too hot. You might be better off to make yours mobile . Or take the plastic off for the summer. Heat is a problem . For your cutting I have seen organic root tones. How well they work I don't know. Love your show and seeing all the different veggies .

Jess, I did cutting off my tomatoes also. I put half into potting soil and the other half I put in my Aero garden. They are both still alive lol. The ones in the aero garden look healthier. But I think both will root. So interested to see how just putting them in water in the window works also. Hope you do an update on that. My brother got me the aero garden for xmas and I love it. In the winter when you just can't wait to plant you can grow in the house. Last winter I just did the herbs that came with it but it did great and I dried herbs all winter. But im.pretty sure I could do the same thing in soil with a good grow light. But the aero garden is fun. Hugs

I use a large sheet of graph paper for each season. I have 63 tire planters and 20 raised beds. They are all numbered so I can keep track of what I plant. I also use rotation practices so I can plan ahead of what will go where. My favorite Noodle bean is Red Noodle, the beans are red so easy to see. I am surprised that you don't grow Crowder Peas. They love the heat. The Tohono Oodham crowder pea from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange will even germinate in 110 degree weather. They are good to plant now because they are fast (65 days to maturity). The Big Red Ripper will even take some cold weather so it is a good one to plant late summer as well.

This is the most busy season between getting ready for school both public and homeschool. My thoughts and prayers for a good school year! I have some things im going through from our HS days....maybe will get a chance to find them and share some with you. Some of the things might still be helpful and give you ideas. I was about to just throw away some of the stuff because I keep holding on to and reboxing, hoping I cant find a use for this cherished information and text. Of course its outdated as far as the work and test books but theres things you still might like to look through and have. Ill start getting serious about looking through it more and see what I can share. Im sure you have plenty of mommas to talk hs and stuff about but I have been through it all and glad to be any help if any I can be. You do have your plate more than full...but its a beautiful season that needs to be savored...lol I cannot believe you went through this huge devastating heat scorching summer without central air...I feel like such a wimp...that heat takes it out of you. Dont push it too hard missy, the brain doesnt do well with scorching...lol hard to recover a set back of heat stroke. Be careful!!! I planted quite a bit and covered it with straw before this monsoon and situated 5 gal buckets under partial tree cover...I cannot believe that two days after I planted I have stuff coming up already. Lettuce radishes turnips beans squash. The inside and outside germinated within two or three days. Lettuce was under two days...im shocked....I did use potting mix and mixed in more perlite and went ahead and mixed in some slow release fertilizer just to try to give it a head start since I waited over three weeks last time. They are green and perky little lettuce sprouts already. Seems like nothing is set in concrete any more...dont know whats the key but so far so good. Now I have to start thinking of what im going to do with all this when its ready to transplant..lol

I am working on a small container garden of tomatoes and peppers. I have leeks and onions growing in my kitchen at the moment and want to add cucumbers to my containers outside. I'm in Texas and can sympathize with the heat issues. It has at least cooled down out of the triple digits. I hope it stays that way. I also understand the juggle. This has absolutely no basis in fact. Everything you apply temperature to is "dead". You raise the heat in them to kill bacteria, right? Cooked foods cells are expanded and burst, that's why they seep and drip and leak and are juicy. Regardless of how you can/cook/ something, raising the heat of it will "kill" it.

Everything she made fit snugly and it was moveable to another bed as it was harvested - great designs!

OH BLESS YOUR HEART JESS. I WAS SITTING HERE WATCHING A DIFFERENT VIDEO ON SELF RELIANCE. I WAS REMEMBERING MOVING INTO HOMES WITH ATTIC FANS BOTH GRANDPARENTS HAD THEM, ALL THE CHICKEN HOUSES HAD THEM. IT MADE SENSE. HAVE YOU THOUGHT OF INVESTING IN ONE OR MAYBE YOU HAVE ONE? IM GLAD YOUR GETTING A LITTLE RELIEF FROM THE HEAT. HERE BEEN BLESSED HERE IN WICHITA KANSAS WITH RAIN AND COOL TEMPERATURES 3 TO 4 DAYS A WEEK. IM WORKING OUT SIDE MAJORITY OF THE DAY BECAUSE THE HEAT DOESN'T BOTHER ME AS LONG AS IM HYDRATED WELL. IT'S THE COLD I CAN'T DEAL WITH. THAT DAMP, COLD ICY, CRAZY WEATHER. IM FROM JUST UP THE INTERSTATE 40 FROM YOU. A SMALL LITTLE TOWN CALLED ATKINS. IM CURRENTLY IN WICHITA KANSAS AND HAVE BEEN ALMOST 21 YEARS NOW. BUT MY BEST YEARS WERE AT ATKINS. I KEEP HOPING SOME DAY TO MOVE HOME AGAIN. OUT IN THE COUNTRY IN A SHED TO TINY HOUSE CONVERSION, A SMALL PIECE OF LAND WITH A MICRO HOMESTEAD. I GUESS IF THE GOOD LORD WANTS THAT FOR ME, HE WILL LEAD ME IN THAT DIRECTION WITH AN OPEN DOOR.

Jess - Did this work? I'm in Alabama and my growing season is long like yours. I would be very interested to know if this worked and if you used any root hormone on the cuttings? Thanks!

Another technique to get new plants quickly is to lay down a ( connected to main plant) stem and bury in the ground. Once rooted you then cut off the baby from the mother plant.

also i tried saving seeds from a squash and cucumber, i fermented them a day or two and laid them out to dry but they just look sort of deflated and floppy. is that because i didnt let the fruit mature enough before i took the seeds?

Great job done Jess! Always have amazing information for folks to learn. Small space is a bit tricky to grow but we do a pretty good job with our 30x50 space. Last year we pulled over 800 lbs of maters. What a year that was but this year with the crazy weather we have had were sitting on 450 lbs so far. Might put a few more plants out for the Fall. Don't think I will use any suckers off these plants. We done a few suckers in GH#2 and maybe you seen how they are coming. Not to good :-( Got some new seeds coming in this week. Thanks for all you do over there! Many folks will have a great garden from watching you.

I love the idea of a fall garden... but the BUGS!! The Beatles are so bad this time of year. My beans coming up are eaten down to a stub the same day they pop up! 😖

Love your videos! Do you can radishes? I came across a recipe for spicy quick pickled radishes to use on sandwiches, etc. They sound so good. Wouldn’t radish sandwiches be good in the middle of winter? I wonder🤔
