Good morning from NC! Love starting the mornings with a dose of Garden Answer. Your channel is one of my first stops when researching new additions. Then, I watch the past garden tours to catch a glimpse of how those plants performed. Any thoughts about creating plant specific videos with updates? For example, a video focusing on all the oso easy roses you’ve planted and how they are doing would be very helpful. Can’t wait to see the cut flower garden with the new shed this year - it will be glorious!

Thanks to you Laura, I went from having 6 cherry tomato plants two years ago to 12 different varieties last year. And this year I sowed 22 varieties. I can't stop, when I was ordering the seeds I saw such fun varieties that I couldn't resist trying them out. Last year was my therapy, I keep my tomatoes pruned to just 1 stem, so every day when I came home from work I would go to the vegetable garden and I would prune some of the tomatoes and tie them, and after that i felt much better, my mental health improved considerably in the season. My father has always planted tomatoes and he has his tricks, thanks to you last year I spent a lot more time with him learning and also teaching him what I was learning with you. At the end of the year we found out that he had lung cancer, and then having those moments with him during the year to exchange ideas meant even more to me and made me even more grateful for having this time with him. Love from Portugal 🇵🇹

Good Morning! I have a story - I married into a farm family, the first year of our marriage we shared a garden with my husband's parents. When you talked about all these varieties of tomatoes it brought a memory - I was used to my Mom growing 1 or 2 tomato plants - well my in laws planted 26 tomato plants!! As a young newly married girl, I was in shock at the mass quantity of plants! But I quickly learned that not only were those tomatoes were eaten fresh but we canned jars & jars & jars of tomato juice for sauce! That first year of marriage was a learning experience for me on being a farm wife! Love listening to all the varieties of tomatoes!! 🙂👩🌾🍅🌿

Tuna salad is typically used for stuffed tomatoes or try chicken salad, I love a baked Caprese' salad! Start with Italian flavored croutons mixed with what you scoop out of the tomato. Add some fresh chopped (or torn) basil and some grated mozzarella. Add salt and pepper to taste. Stuff the tomato with the mixture. Place in a glass or ceramic baking dish, bake at 350 covered for 15 - 20 minutes. Uncover and sprinkle with grated mozzarella and bake until melted. Sprinkle with a few small pieces fresh basil and serve. Sometimes I add couscous and chopped black olives to the stuffing.

I also wish you would check out Barry’s crazy cherry from Baker Creek if you’ve never ground those before. They are indeed crazy little producers. Perfect for garden snacks and salads! Hi Laura, I just wanted to thank you for all you do. You have given me the courage to do so much this past year. In 2020 I made the decision to leave a stressful job, sell my house, in Arizona, and buy a farm on 20 acres outside of Springfield Missouri. I closed escrow on my dream farm in August 2021. I've yearned for years to be surrounded by flowers and trees and grow my own veggies. As I watch your videos I get the courage to repot my orchids, and divide my old African violets. I planted 350 bulbs in November and we dug out a 4,000 sf garden area for my veggies and a cut flower garden. I bought a bunch of seeds and grow lights and am enjoying starting my own plants. It's so exciting to get up each morning to see what has sprouted! I bought 5 hydrangeas yesterday on the clearance rack (they didn't sell for Valentine's Day). I brought them home and repotted them and will plant them in a month or so. I'm in the process of clearing out a forest area that hasn't been cleared for years, and am so excited to have my first ever shade gardens. I used to be afraid of now knowing enough to do this, but after watching you every day, you've given me the courage to just go for it. I'm sure I'll have successes and failures and I realize that it's a learning process and I'm enjoying every minute of it. I've watched all of your garden tours over and over, and am taking notes of plants I hope to have someday. Now that I've retired I have lots of time and not much money so it will probably take a few years to see my gardens really take shape, but what fun! Thanks again! .......I thought I was being wild buying 5 different types of tomato seeds! You always bring a smile to my face!!!

Those tomatoes that you haven’t had much success with, could you pot some of those up in some large pots and leave in the greenhouse to prolong its time to mature? They may be worth it.
@jenniferrue6580
2 жыл бұрын
At what point does starting plants, specifically tomatoes in this case, help you have tomatoes earlier in the season versus not making much difference? It seems like often smaller, later started plants or those that I can ground sow tend to “catch up” to earlier started veggies or flowers. Zinnias and cucumbers seem to end up blooming at the same time regardless what you do. We battle a very short growing season so I’m slowly learning what is worth the time and what isn’t.

You should try some dwarf tomato varieties! Victory seeds has the whole line from the Dwarf tomato project. They are indeterminate in terms of maturing throughout the season, but they grow at half the vertical rate so they need much less staking and pruning, it's the best. They are also open pollinated, so you can save seeds from them and they will stay true to variety. They are the best!

Also have you ever planted white tomatoes? I had 2 plants last year and they were very good tasting. However very different to can, it was just weird with the sauce being white and not red. Thank you for sharing all this tomato information and making it easier to remember the difference between determinate and indeterminate! as far as i know, some tomatoes are prone to not pollinate during high heat. I witnessed it in my own garden - i live in NC and July is brutal heat and humidity here, so my tomatoes did not set fruit during that month. Some fared better than others though, but my orange heirloom tomatoes had a very poor harvest that year. that said- you can always experiment with a few plants to see if you are successful - especially if you have a long enough season

Such a great variety of tomatoes, Laura. It will be interesting to see how they do and how you like them. As far as stuffed tomatoes, you can stuff them with anything…tuna, chicken or any type of salad you like, which will provide the protein for a salad dinner on a hot summer day when you don’t feel like eating anything hot. Near the end of the season when the weather was getting cooler one of my friends used to cut the tops off and sprinkle them with a little thyme, basil, tarragon, or any other herb she had, a little sprinkle of breadcrumbs and grated cheese and put them under the broiler for a few minutes. They were very good and something different after a season of fresh tomatoes. Long tomatoes can be sliced lengthwise to do this.

Happy Friday from Alabama! Laura, when you were filling the cells with soil in the fast mode, all I could think of was Lucy and Ethel on the chocolate factory line. Looks like some mighty yummy tomatoes!🌱🍅🌞

I have been growing seeds for years and never considered timing to start them until this year (after having an entire vegetable garden ready a month early last year). But was wondering is the timing seed packets say for; planting seed until putting the plants out, or is it; from germination until putting plants out? IE do you need to add a week or whatever for account for time from sowing to germination as well sometimes? I start mine in a cold basement, so thinking I should also account for the delayed germination. Thanks!

They will bloom __ days from when you transplant them out. So if you start them march 1st, (6 weeks before your last frost), then transplant them out, you would start counting the __ days at that point.

When the instructions on a seed packet says 22-30 days to harvest. ... "The “days to maturity” number describes the average number of days from planting until it's time to harvest. For seeds sown directly in the ground, that means from seeding to maturity. The time it takes from seed (or transplant) to harvest will differ between different growing regions. Germination = when you see green popping up Plant maturity/harvest is a term used with annual flowers and vegetables to indicate when the plants flower or set fruit. When it comes to vegetables, however, maturity is not so well defined. It is generally accepted that maturity is the point in which you can start picking vegetables, whether they’re ripened fruits (like tomatoes and eggplants), fully-formed but still tightly-closed flower buds (like broccoli and artichokes), or full-sized roots (like beets and radishes). Days to maturity/harvest starts the first day your seed starts to germinate, and not the first day you plant. For vegetables that are directly sown into the ground, the count begins when the seedling has its first set of true leaves. For seeds that are usually started indoors first and then planted in the garden, like tomatoes and peppers, time to maturity is measured from the day you transplant the seedlings in the soil to the day you pick the first ripe fruit, not when they get their first true leaves. The best way to determine when a crop reaches maturity is by counting the growing degree days or GDD. This is what the growers use. Knowing this, you can effectively predict how many days it will take for a tomato plant or any other vegetable to mature in your garden, in your climate, during the growing season. This works best for ALL zones. GDD = (high temperature + Low Temperature/2 = Base Temperature Tomatoes, for example, have a base temperature of 50°F. They do not grow at temperatures below 50°F, and they need 1,300 to 1,700 GDD to ripen (depending on cultivar). This article discusses how to do that and all that should be considered when sowing your seeds for all crops; i.e., temperature, rain, drought, pests, over-fertilizing, and under-fertilizing www.gardenbetty.com/how-to-use-days-to-maturity-on-a-seed-packet-to-help-you-be-a-better-gardener/ www.gardenbetty.com/decoding-your-garden-seed-catalogs/ AFTER ALL THIS, THE BEST WAY TO TELL WHEN SHOULD YOU PLANT YOUR TOMATOES AND HOW I DO IT IS TO GOOGLE: 1. "when is it the best time to plant tomatoes in Zone 8b" (which is my zone) Following was my answer: "The time to plant tomatoes in USDA zone 8b is roughly 4 to 6 weeks before the last reported frost date for that area." 2. Then I Googled: "when is the last frost date in zone 8b?" and the answer is March 13-28. "While tomatoes are capable of withstanding hot temperatures provided they receive enough moisture, they cannot tolerate the least amount of frost and cannot be transplanted into the garden in USDA zone 8b until the ground has warmed to at least 55 degrees Fahrenheit." So, I'll give it one more week after the 28th to account for this crazy weather we are having and will transplant my seedlings on April 15th. That means that I should start my seeds no earlier than Feb 20th. I usually wait until Mar to play it safe. Since I want to transplant them on April 15th, I am starting the seeds Mar 4 to Mar 6. 3. So, I Google: "how many days it takes to harvest tomatoes in zone 8b" The answer is: "Tomatoes require 90-140 days to mature from seed; 60-90 days from transplanting, depending on the variety." So, I can count on having tomatoes between June 15th and July 15th after I transplant them on April 15. HOPE THIS WORKS FOR YOU. JUST KNOW YOUR GROWING ZONE, GOOGLE and DO THE COUNTING USING YOUR CALENDAR!!

Stuffed tomatoes Method more than recipe Cut the top off several meaty tomatoes and scoop the pulp out. Salt the inside and let drain/desiccate a few minutes while you mix the stuffing Stuffing Fresh bread crumbs - about 1TBS per tomato Lightly blanched broccoli Mix together wet stuff in a large bowl 1/4 finely chopped onion 2 cloves garlic, minced Mayonnaise (2 big spoonfuls?) Smoked paprika Worcestershire sauce Dash of hot sauce Oregano thumb It should taste like a mayonnaisey barbecue sauce at this point. Mix a cup or so of Grated grated cheese of choice into mayonnaise mixture. I use whatever I have - usually cheddar, guyerre, mozzarella, Asiago Once cheese is mixed in, mix in broccoli and bread crumbs. Fill each tomato with filling and line up in a casserole dish. Let any extra stuffing fall over the sides of the tomatoes. Bake at 400 until bubbly, 25 min or so. Excellent with grilled meat for a fast prep meal.

26! Wow. I'm going the opposite direction this year, being realistic about how many tomatoes we eat AND how many plants I can keep up with pruning. So it's two Sweet Millions and one sandwich variety this year and that's it. Self pinky promise.

This was great info, thank you! I’ve already planted seeds for this year but took notes today for next years tomato crop. Does anyone know where the seeds are from that were in the plastic bags. The ‘Beefsteak’ and ‘Big Boy’ varieties? I don’t recall that info being mentioned and I didn’t see it on the package.

What a great help in today’s video! My gardening is so challenged by lots of shade, but I want to find one sunny spot to try tomatoes (again) this year. Could I make one suggestion? The photos included with each variety were gorgeous, but no variety names were displayed per photo. I watch using closed captions and laughed out loud when the Sweet Aperitif came up as “Sweet Apper Teeth”. (Ah, the challenges of CC.) Either way, you guys do a great job and I learn so much. Thank you!

Ribbed ( fluted) tomatoes are beautiful when sliced and put on a sandwich, especially open faced sandwiches.😊 The little ridges make it look like a flower.

I started Grand Marshall tomatoes yesterday. They are suppose to tolerate heat w/o dropping blooms. I’m south GA , 8b, so this should be a good test of their claim to fame.

I absolutely LOVE that in 2022 we all *still* don’t know how to say Wyche. 😂 Edit: next year you should try Wild Boar seeds. They’re from California so they’re already acclimated to arid growing conditions. It really does make a difference when your days go above 90F. For the same reason I grow San Diego Seed’s tomato too. :) ALSO: I’m in 9b and can’t get green zebra to flower before July to save my life. In fact they didn’t pollinate until august last year. Boo hiss.

Hello. Can you tell me where you got the seeds in the clear baggie type packaging? I am always looking for new seed companies and don't know that one. Thank you! Oh, I am trying Purple Reign also. Looks interesting.
