@SheridanONeill

I first met Tommy in 1991 in Geelong, Australia. I was only 15yrs old, and in the midst of pure homelife hell. I saw him play 3-4 times a year, front row centre each time. Tommy not only inspired me to be a better guitar player, the best thing he taught me was how to strive to always be a good person, be humble, stay true to myself...and the fact music is the best medicine. He truly got me through some real tough times in the early 1990's, just by simply being himself and taking the time to hang around after his show until he'd spoken to each and every fan. I always waited until last, just to try + make sure he knew how valued he was to me as a person, and get a few extra minutes with him to soak up the warmth of his soul. Thanks mate xo

+Randolph Scudder I know what you mean. I've been playing guitar for 46 years and I guess I've reached a certain skill level, but whenever I start to think "I'm pretty darn good", all I have to do is watch one of the many KZitem videos of Tommy Emmanuel, and that gets my head on straight again. I get humbled right off my chair. He is a true acoustic guitar virtuoso and a helluva showman. He connects with his audience in the best possible way, and he is always entertaining. I've heard hundreds, maybe thousands of great guitarists over the last 50 years, but rarely have I ever heard anyone as good, both technically, and showing his heart, as Tommy Emmanuel. You watch and listen to him, and you are watching the very best. I'm a good enough guitarist that I know and understand completely what he is doing with his guitar, but I have given up any hope of getting as good as he is. I can only do my best, and work hard to get better. He is the gold standard for guitar playing, IMHO.

I saw him and band back in 1996ish in Sydney, Australia with my Mum and younger brother. It was in a little club down in 'The Rocks' (for anyone who knows Sydney). Ther would have been maybe 150 packed into this club and we like most were standing then this foursome, who had a table directly in front of the stage, just grabbed their stuff and left; just before he was going to start, why I don't know but - I kid you not - I didn't know that my mother could move so quickly over short distances, but before anyone could blink we had that table and the night of our lives. The only time that I've ever gone to a concert with my mother but I am so glad that I have that memory, and I tell you I am so glad that Tommy Emmanuel is still as humble, dynamic and entertaining now (with his much deserved international success) as he was then. He still says his brother Phil is a better player than he is (for me I think it's a toss up, they're both sensational) just showing the great warmth, generosity and spirit of the man. He's a great Australian, that's for damn sure !!

The most amazing thing about Tommy's playing is not just his incredible skill, wonderful sense of humor, and playing from the heart, but it's the fact that he is deaf! That's right, deaf. I learned on PBS yesterday that Tommy has only 20% of his hearing. He wears hearing aids in both ears. He lost his hearing to rheumatic fever as a little boy. Good thing his parents encouraged him to keep on with his music. The world has been given another Ludwig Beethoven - also a deaf composer. Tommy is a living testimony that we can overcome anything. Now that's amazing grace.

I've been playing since I was a kid studying classical guitar & Beethoven described the 'guitars of his day' as being 'mini orchestras' - a good player like T. E ćan bring out three or four 'voices' in the one piece and even on a piano you can't do that. Some wood, metaĺ & strings & you've got a magic box that you carry around a lot easier than a piano. A very pedestrian instrument.
@drumjunk1
8 жыл бұрын
Right. That's what every good instrumentalist does: using his instrument not as a tool, but as an integral part of his own body: look at James Moody playing flute, Sonny Rollins, Zoot Sims or Joshua Redman on tenor, Decebal Badila or Aladar Pege on double bass, Sharon Kam on clarinet, Roby Lakatos, Jozsef Lendvay or Maxim Vengerov on violin, or even Martha Argerich on piano, just to name some of my favourites, regardless of style. Unfortunately, there are many musicians who play like a well trained bird - world record attemps of David Garrett and megalomaniac events of Lang Lang are not the kind of music I have in mind. Back to the topic: I'm not adept at guitar music and must confess I never heard of Tommy Emmanuel before (please forgive me), but he is really great, and I'll keep an eye on him.

pier mailme As an Australian who's seen Tommy Emmanuel live, last century, I can say that his style has coalesced from a more diverse range of influences to very much concentrating on his primary influence whch was/is Chet Atkins. That being said I disagree with your assessment that he is playing 'standard blues'. He plays pretty much anything you want but instead of simply strumming chords or playing one note scale run lead breaks TE plays a melody line accompanied by chordal structure underneath topped off with a walking bass line. If you REALLY want to investigate his earlier playing check out anything from the list below though being pre youtube I doubt that you'll find much on here and you might have to payto hear the tunes instead of being free at a mouseclick. You can't say you even had to look however I just copied and pasted from his Wikipedia page and I'd encourage you to read it - his father took him, his brother Phil and the family on the road when he was six, playing professionally at that age, drums as well later on and more but read it yourself, basically I'm saying he's not just some guitar gymnast he's a versatile musician but if it's too FAST for you to keep up I'm sure he'd be open to slowing down for you. Oh and Dare to be different, Determination and Initiation have some great electric stuff with full band tracks - this was before his solo accoustic carreer took over entirely. Enjoy 1979 From Out of Nowhere 1983 Live at Last by Goldrush 1987 Up From Down Under 1990 Dare to Be Different 1992 Determination 1993 The Journey 1993 The Journey Continues 1995 Initiation 1995 Terra Firma (with Phil Emmanuel) 1995 Classical Gas 1996 Can't Get Enough 1997 Midnight Drive (Re-titled US release of Can't Get Enough) 1997 The Day Finger Pickers Took Over The World (With Chet Atkins)

With all due respect, I recognized the Chet Atkins sound and that is why I said that. Also, I listen to quality jazz, blues and rock and roll from the 60’s and 70’s, Hendrix, Cream, Santana, BB King, Beck. Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Tito Fuente, Pink Floyd, Pancho Sanchez, etc, if that is what you call “simple strumming of chords and playing one note scale run leads”. I also don’t base my opinion of music on what someone’s father did, how old he was when he started, or what else he plays. I only know that this gentleman plays like he is running out of time and throws in dozens of unnecessary notes, even if they are in key and in tune. It is a major distraction from the way the song was written and it blurs the melody too much for my ears. All the groups I mentioned are NOT versatile musician? I guess if you are “an Australian who's seen Tommy Emmanuel live”, you know better than me what is good. I’m just an American born musician and I can’t have an opinion, right?

There's a man that followed his heart. As a result, his soul is able to sincerely project itself in a positive way, and in return, make the world a better place. Thank you Mr.Emmanuel.

Even today, after so many years, it is a great pleasure to be able to watch this Legend. I am proud to have seen him live in Ludwigshafen/Germany many years ago....

I had the pleasure of seeing him play with "The John Farnham Band " playing support to Stevie Wonder , I could see the members of that band at the sides of the stage checking out the local talent ....and like Stevie ,they loved it ! Best in the world .

Epi Phone I have never met the man and don't know if he believes in God or not but I'll choose too believe that's why he played Amazing Grace because he is thankful for the God given talent he has worked so hard to perfect!

For my earlier, childish reply I apologise. I don't believe in a universal supreme being, stop short of atheism but fall into the agnostic camp (yes, a proverbial doubting Thomas). I do believe in an all encompassing spirituality, some living beings possess more, some less. If there is a God, & I truly hope that there is, T.E's musical talent was certainly given by same & crafted with his own toil, to the seemingly magical performances that he regularly gives. He is a true gentleman & a fine Australian.

Epi Phone No harm done and I accept your apology. I can truly say that I have met this man named Jesus in 1971 when He touched and healed my mother. She was very ill. I have no reason at all to lie to you or try to deceive you. I am receiving nothing from you for what I say. I am just speaking from personal experience and it cost you nothing. God is truly real and He loves you when no one else cares. Seek for the truth! God Bless You!

Watching this on the day his brother Phil Emmanuel passed away. This "Amazing Grace" would be appropriate for Phil's funeral.

One the very best, most talented guitarists I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. I love the inclusion of 'Walk don't run' in the middle there (the old Ventures track). Absolutely stunning musician!

OK, you got me, I was always a bit wary of Mr, Emmanuel and his Style of playing (a bit over the top I always thought) but, having had the house to myself this Weekend I somehow got into a never ending "Tommy Emmanuel Loop" on KZitem and I am totally converted, This man is amazing. Long live the King!

I have met Tommy on 4 occasions, even just near his area at the shops, this guy is a highly skilled musician. If anybody has anything bad to say, you are either trolling, or a nasty person who hates life... To all those that do, get up there and start entertaining people.... See what skills you have to draw a crowd.

He is perhaps the most overrated guitar player in the history of guitar playing. He does not understand music at all.
