Very helpful video. I left the tape on overnight and removed following day - catastrophic - silicone feathering! Key learning point for me is the need to remove tape 'immediately' after applying mastic. Thanks again!!

What also helps is running the bead of silicon and then spraying over the line with some soapy water from a spray bottle filled with dishwashing detergent and water "1:10 mix". This prevents the silicon from smudging or sticking to the tiles around the join. Thus eliminating the need for masking tape
@bassheadjohn

M Peff that is an obsurd comment. "Technically" and maybe on paper but in the real world grouting between a tub and tile will not last more than a couple uses. As soon as weight is in the tub your grout will fall out and/or crack. If you keep your tile and grout sealed your water damn theory doesn't hold up. Tommy Knows! This is a great video with very useful information for someone that might need help doing this job.

thanks for sharing. I do alot of mastic work but rarely by masking it. I found that you gotta be careful not to allow too much mastic to build up on the tape after you've smoothed it off, as it can then make a mess as you pull the tape away. Personally,i find the sealant smoothing tools work really well,especially the packs of the square pieces of rubber,each with a different size and type of corner or curve on it. Nice job m8.

This is the first time I've seen the tip about putting two lines of masking tape around the bath to make nice straight edges along both edges. Thank you Tommy's Trade Secrets for this brilliant tip:-) But another tip that sounds good is that you should fill the bath BEFORE applying silicon. This is because if you silicon an empty bath and then fill the bath with water, apparently the weight of the water could split the silicon? Obviously, this is only possible if your bath already has its taps fitted and water connected ;-)

Heres the tip from: andy t half fill it with water, first if you seal it empty - it gets stretched a long way if you seal it half full, when you empty the bath, the seal will be in 50% compression and when the bat is full, its in 50% stretch. Makes sense to me, anyone else!
