......Also of significance is that since the air vent mounted sat nav will be lower than the windscreen-mounted position, it will be easier to read the speed limit icon - especially for those who like me wear bifocals! So thanks again for your invaluable advice and video!

Many thanks Martin, I do wear bifocals. The device is also within arm's length so no leaning forward. This setup is ideal for me. Thank you for your kind comment, and hope you find your comfort zone with your device.

Brilliant solution Paul - thanks! Presumably your GREAT IDEA would also avoid the glare and distracting windscreen reflection - particularly at night -

Sorry Martin, didn't see your last snippet, suppose the reflection and glare issues are connected with device location, driver seating and vehicle type, but for me in this VW, no glare or reflections. tweak until it's right. kind regards, Paul.

Sorry about previous (unfinished) comment Paul - first time I've ever made a public comment, and I accidentally pressed in the wrong place! (Neither do I know if questions are permitted in these posts btw.) So to finish the previous comment a few moments ago (which unfortunately I can't now view as I write): presumably the air vent mount, apart from being better positioned for viewing the sat nav screen, would also avoid the dangerous - or at the very least distracting - reflection of the sat nav screen on the car's windscreen at night? GREAT! Also of significance is that - no doubt like many other aged drivers (?!) - I wear bifocals, and have found as a result that due to the relative distance and up-elevation (from the driver's line of vision) of the windscreen-mounted sat nav, I have to lean forward to view the speed limit display! As I'm about to upgrade from the Go 1000 to the slightly larger Go 5100 your advice and video have been invaluable! Thanks again Paul!

Looks like a great idea. my only concern is how you removed the ball, from the socket on your 5100 supplied mount. This is the only problem I can see with this idea.

hi, I must admit I did think it was going to be a difficult job. I was used to my old TomTom Via 135 for many years. This had a groove in the ball, which when aligned with the outer edge of the ball casing just simply popped out. TomTom wouldn't make life so easy on the 5100 mount though! I used some savy and applied a similar method to this. using a small amount of pressure to bring the ball and edge together with a bit of kitchen tissue between, brought the ball out without any damage. you'll see what I mean if you look at the attachment for the universal mount designed for the via 135. hope this helps.

Hi, thanks for commenting. I can't say for sure. I've had a look at mounts on Google images, they're pretty inconclusive regarding ball size. I would say though, they do look similar. I'm a great believer in R&D. Find the best value item online and try it. Once again, thanks for comment, sorry I can't be of more help and kind regards, Paul.

Does the unit wobble very much when driving? and how easy is it to disconnect the ball from the 5100?

hi, the universal mount isn't designed for the larger TomToms, but it's fine as I use it. I must just say that the vent I've mounted it on does have a good backward tilt. This helps the weight distribution on the mount. The whole thing is very well behaved. I've had no issues over thousands of miles on motorways, A/B roads. No, it doesn't wobble during use.

sorry!!! forgot to say how the ball joint came out. I was used to my old TomTom Via 135 for many years. This had a groove in the ball, which when aligned with the outer edge of the ball casing just simply popped out. TomTom wouldn't make life so easy on the 5100 mount though!
